In this study, the researcher studied the image of Korea in Australian high school history textbooks. It is true that Korea’s status has risen significantly in recent years compared to the past. In particular, the K-dramas that became popular worldwide in 2021 are a good example of the so-called Han-Ryu craze. In addition, the performance of the ‘Yellow Coin Collecting Charity Event’ held in France in January 2025 can be said to be one of the good achievements that made Korea’s status known. In addition, Korea’s status in the K-pop and sports fields has become incomparable to that of the 1980s and 90s. The easiest way for Australians to get to know Korea is through the Internet, social media, and YouTube. While we learned about Korea’s present through various internet media, most of the textbooks in our own countries, which can be said to be the official route, were about Korea’s past. It is also covered in very small, or in some cases, Korea is not covered at all. In this study, the researcher tried to understand the description of Australian high school textbooks on Korea. This is because Korea and Australia rank fifth in terms of trade volume, Australia ranks fourth in terms of study abroad preferences among Korean university students. Based on these facts, for the study of Australian high school history textbooks, we conducted a literature search to understand the Korean state described in Australian high school textbooks. The characteristics of Korean technology in Australian high school textbooks are as follows. First, there were many descriptions related to the Korean War, and second, there were problems caused by the fact that the volume was too small and was reduced to describe it. Third, it was said that it was using data based on Japan’s colonial history. To overcome this, first, it is necessary to discover and support scholars who study in Australia. Furthermore, it is necessary to form a consultative body of textbook-related workers to continue discussions. Second, the government needs to make efforts to ensure that accurate and correct information is. To this end, the role of the Overseas Koreans Administration, which began in 2023, is more important than anything else.

본 연구에서는 호주 고등학교 역사 교과서에 나타난 한국의 이미지에 관해 연구 하였다. 최근 들어 한국의 위상은 과거와 비교하여 볼 때 매우 높아진 것이 사실이 다. 특히 2021년에 세계적으로 유행한 K-드라마는 소위 말하는 한류열풍을 보여 주는 좋은 예라 할 것이다. 또한 2025년 1월 프랑스에서 열린 ‘노란 동전 모으기 자선행사’ 무대는 한국의 위상을 알린 좋은 성과 중의 하나라고 할 수 있다. 그 외에 도 K-Pop이나 스포츠 분야에서 한국의 위상은 1980년대와 90년대와는 비교도 할 수 없을 정도가 되었다. 이러한 높아진 한국을 호주 사람들이 알게 되는 가장 쉬운 통로는 인터넷, 혹은 SNS 그리고 유튜브와 같은 매체들에 의해서이다. 한국 의 현재는 이렇게 다양한 인터넷 매체를 통해 알게 되는 데 비해 공식적인 루트라고 할 수 있는 자국의 교과서에서는 한국의 과거에 대한 것을 배우는 것이 대부분이었 다. 그것도 아주 적은 분량으로 다루어지고 있거나, 심한 경우 아예 한국을 다루지 않고 있다. 본 연구에서는 한국에 대한 호주 고등학교 교과서의 기술이 어떠한지를 파악하려 고 하였다. 그것은 한국과 호주의 무역 규모가 5위이며, 한국 대학생 중 유학 선호 도에서 호주가 4위를 기록하고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 사실을 바탕으로 호주 고등 학교 역사 교과서 연구를 위해서 문헌조사를 통하여 호주 고등학교 교과서에서 기 술되고 있는 한국의 모습을 파악하였다. 호주 고등학교 교과서에 나타난 한국에 관 한 기술의 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 주로 한국전쟁과 관련된 기술이 많다는 것, 둘째, 분량이 너무 적어 축소되어 기술하면서 발생하는 문제들이었다. 셋째, 일본 의 식민 사관에 기초한 자료를 사용하고 있다는 것이었다. 이를 극복하기 위해 첫째, 호주에서 연구하는 학자들을 발굴하여 지원하는 노력 이 필요하다. 더 나아가서 교과서 관련 종사자들의 협의체를 구성하여 논의를 계속 하는 노력이 필요하다. 둘째, 정확하면서도 올바른 정보가 전달될 수 있도록 정부 의 노력이 필요하다. 이를 위해 2023년에 시작된 재외동포청의 역할이 무엇보다 중요하다.
