The spread and popularity of Korean culture in the United States have been unlike what it used to be. Thus, the current study examine how current development of the motherland influences cultural identity of 1.5 and 2nd generation Korean Americans. Moreover, the study examines other factors that strengthen their cultural identity. Findings from 13 in-depth interviews show that they experience the elevation of their mother country’s status in their daily lives, and that Korea’s image and status have had a positive influence on strengthening their Korean identity. Moreover, it was revealed that their “parental status” played a more positive role in strengthening their Korean identity, and that their Korean identity was further enhanced due to “aging.” The participants also expressed their hope that their children would grow up with both American and Korean identities, as they recognized this as a necessity for ethnic minorities living in the US.

한류의 일환으로 미국에서의 한국문화의 확산 및 인기는 예전과 현저히 다른 양 상을 보이고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 모국의 위상 제고로 인한 1.5세, 2세 재미 한인들의 정체성 변화를 살펴보고 그 외에 이들의 한인으로서의 정체성 함양에 영 향을 미치는 요인들을 탐색적으로 살펴보았다. 13명의 재미한인들과의 심층 인터 뷰 결과 그들은 일상에서 모국의 위상 제고를 체감하고 있으며, 한국의 이미지와 위상제고가 한인으로서의 정체성 강화에 긍정적 영향 미친다고 하였다. 하지만 모 국의 위상 제고보다는 자신들의 “부모 됨”이 한인으로서의 정체성 강화에 더 긍정 적 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났으며 추가로 “나이 듦”으로 인하여 한인으로서의 정 체성이 더 제고된 것으로 드러났다. 마지막으로 참여자들은 자녀들이 미국인으로 서의 정체성과 한인으로서의 정체성을 둘 다 가지고 성장하길 바라고 있었으며 이 는 소수민족으로 미국에서 거주하는데 필요한 부분으로 인식하고 있었다.
