This study examines the poetic concept of Yijing (意境, poetic realm) as it is manifested in the poetry of Jungbong Jo Heon (重峯趙憲, 1544– 1592), a leading Neo-Confucian scholar and practitioner of the mid-Joseon period. Yijing refers to an artistic ideal in which the poet's internal intention (yi, 意) and external scene (jing, 境) are organically harmonized, creating a poetic space where emotion and reason, beauty and morality are intertwined. The mid-Joseon period was characterized by strong Confucian ideals and a heightened sense of moral practice, during which poetry served not only as an aesthetic medium but also as a vehicle for ethical self-reflection and social awareness. The study begins by reviewing the theoretical foundations of Yijing as articulated in Wang Changling’s Shige (詩格) and Wang Guowei’s Renjian Cihua (人間詞話), highlighting the dynamic interaction between “yi” and “jing” in East Asian poetics. Based on this theoretical framework, six poems by Jo Heon were closely examined to explore the ways in which spatial imagery, symbolic use of nature, seasonal and emotional shifts, and auditory elements contribute to the poetic formation of Yijing. The findings reveal that Jo Heon’s poetry goes beyond lyrical sentiment or scenic description; it expresses the Confucian scholar's ethical convictions and engagement with reality through a sensuous and symbolic poetic landscape. His work exemplifies the Confucian integration of emotion and morality, art and ethical practice, presenting a meaningful case of Yijing as realized in Joseon literati poetry.

본 논문은 조선 중기의 실천적 유학자 중봉 조헌(重峯趙憲, 1544–1592)의 시문학을 대상으로 하여, 그의 시에 내재된 ‘의경(意境)’의 형상화 양상을 고찰하고자 한 것이다. ‘의경’은 시인의 내면 사유(意)와 외부 경물(境)의 유기적 조화를 통해 형성 되는 시적 경지로 감정과 이성, 미와 도덕이 융합된 예술적 이상을 뜻한다. 조선 중기 는 유교적 명분과 실천이 중시되던 시기로 시 또한 도덕적 자각과 현실 인식의 통로로 기능하였다. 본 논문은 먼저 왕창령의『시격』, 왕국유의『인간사화』등에서 ‘의’와 ‘경’ 의 개념적 토대를 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 조헌의 시 6편을 중심으로 자연 이미지, 공 간의 상징성, 계절과 정서의 교차, 청각적 요소 등을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 조헌의 시는 단순한 서정이나 자연 묘사를 넘어, 유학자의 내면 수양과 현실 참여의 의지가 감각적 시공간 안에 구현되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 조헌 시문학이 감정과 윤리, 미 와 도를 통합한 유가적 문학실천으로서, 시를 통해 정신적 경계를 형성하고자 했던 의 경의 한 사례라 할 수 있다.
