Mud Gugu from Xun County is a significant representative of Chinese folk clay sculpture art and was among the first items inscribed on the national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in China. It embodies rich regional folk beliefs and historical-cultural connotations. This study explores the origins of Mud Gugu from two complementary perspectives: folk belief and archaeological discovery. By analyzing folk cultural phenomena alongside archaeological sites and unearthed artifacts, this paper investigates the interplay between intangible cultural expressions and material evidence. The findings suggest that the origins of Mud Gugu's folk belief system are closely tied to temple fair rituals, bird totem worship, fertility worship, and war memorial practices, with roots traceable to prehistoric societies. Among the earliest archaeological evidence is a Han dynasty-era Mud Gugu artifact, which substantiates the oral and ritual-based traditions. This dual validation—through both folklore and archaeology—not only deepens the inquiry into Mud Gugu’s origin but also emphasizes its cultural transmission and the importance of preservation. The study further contributes theoretical insight and practical approaches for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage.

중국 민간 토우 채색 조형예술의 대표적인 사례로 꼽히는 '쥔셴 니구구(浚縣泥 咕咕)'는 제1차 국가급 무형문화유산에 등재되었으며, 지역 민속 신앙과 역사 문화의 함의를 풍부하게 담고 있다. 본 연구는 민속 신앙과 고고학적 발견이라는 이중적 시각 을 바탕으로 니구구의 기원 문제를 체계적으로 고찰하고, 문화 상징 기호로서의 역사 적 변천과 사회적 기능을 규명하고자 하였다. 민속 문화 현상에 대한 분석과 함께 유적 지 및 출토 유물을 통합적으로 고찰함으로써 문화적 해석과 물질적 증거 간의 상관성 을 심층적으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 니구구의 민속 신앙적 기원은 주로 묘회 제사, 조류 토템 숭배, 생식 숭배, 전쟁 기념 등 원시 사회의 신앙 체계에 기반하고 있으며, 고고학적 측면에서는 한대 출토 토우 유물이 현존하는 가장 이른 사례로 확인되어 신 앙 기원의 실증적 근거를 제공한다. 민속 신앙과 고고학의 이중적 검증을 통해 니구구 의 기원을 심층적으로 해명하였을 뿐 아니라, 문화유산의 전승과 보존의 중요성에 대 한 이론적 토대를 마련하고 실천적 방향성을 제시하였다.
