Domestic traffic accidents are a serious social problem causing human and material damage, with the annual number of accidents not significantly decreasing and the number of traffic accident deaths among OECD countries remaining high. Accordingly, analyzing the fundamental causes of traffic accidents and devising practical preventive measures are emerging as important tasks. This study aims to cluster traffic accident types by applying the K-modes clustering (Cluster Analysis) technique using domestic traffic accident data, and to analyze the characteristics of each accident type to propose effective preventive measures. In particular, it seeks to enhance the effectiveness of traffic accident prevention policies through more comprehensive data analysis, overcoming the limitations of previous studies that were limited to specific regions, age groups, and vehicle types. This study conducted a more comprehensive analysis of traffic accident types by utilizing traffic accident data from all regions of Korea, and complemented the limitations of previous studies by suggesting effective preventive measures in administrative, institutional, and educational aspects. In practice, it can be used as basic data for the police and traffic safety agencies to establish more effective crackdowns and preventive policies, and academically, it can promote a multidisciplinary approach to traffic safety research.

국내 교통사고는 인적·물적 피해를 초래하는 심각한 사회 문제이며, 연간 사고 건수가 크게 감소하지 않고 OECD 국가 중 교통사고 사망자 수 또한 높은 수준을 유지하고 있다. 이에 따라 교통사고의 근본적인 발생 요인을 분석하고, 실질적인 예방책을 마련하는 것이 중요한 과제로 부각되고 있다. 본 연구는 국내 교통사고 데이터를 활용하여 K-modes 클러스터링(Cluster Analysis) 기법을 적용함으로써 교통사고 유형을 군집화하고, 유형별 사고 특성을 분석하여 효과적인 예방책을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 기존 연구들이 특정 지역, 연령대, 차종 등에 국한되었던 한계를 극복하고, 보다 포괄적인 데이터 분석을 통해 교통사고 예방 정책의 실효성을 높이고자 한다. 본 연구는 국내 전 지역의 교통사고 데이터를 활용하여 보다 종합적인 교통사고 유형 분석을 수행하였으며, 관리적, 제도적, 교육적 측면에서 실효성 있는 예방 대책을 제시함으로써 기존 연구의 한계를 보완하였다. 실무적으로는 경찰 및 교통안전 기관이 보다 효과적인 단속 및 예방 정책을 수립하는 데 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있으며, 학문적으로는 교통안전 연구의 다학제적 접근을 촉진할 수 있다.
