Proportional reasoning deepens elementary students’ understanding of ratio and proportion concepts while laying the foundation for subsequent studies in functions and algebra. However, many students struggle to clearly distinguish between proportional and non-proportional situations, often applying proportional formulas mechanically. This study aimed to address these learning limitations by examining the effect of an instruction that emphasizes the understanding of "proportional relationships" through visual representations on the proportional reasoning abilities of sixth-grade students. Two sixth-grade classes were divided into an experimental group and a control group, with pre- and post-tests conducted alongside both quantitative and qualitative analyses. The findings revealed that the experimental group significantly improved its overall proportional reasoning skills compared to the control group, with particularly marked differences observed in missing value processing, quantitative comparison, and non-proportional situation tasks. Moreover, students in the experimental group effectively employed informal strategies during various proportional problem-solving processes, confirming that visual representations help in understanding proportional relationships, reducing errors, and broadening the range of problem-solving strategies. Based on these results, the study presents educational implications for the use of visual representations in teaching proportional reasoning.

비례추론은 초등 수학 교육에서 비와 비율 개념의 이해를 심화시키며, 이후 함수 및 대수 개념 학습의 토대를 마련하는 중요한 사고 과정이다. 그러나 많은 학생들 이 비례 개념을 형식적인 알고리즘에만 의존하여 이해하고 있어, 개념적 이해를 촉 진할 수 있는 교수·학습 전략의 도입이 필요하다. 이에 본 연구는 시각적 표현을 중심으로 비례 관계의 개념적 이해를 강조한 수업이 초등학교 6학년 학생의 비례 추론 능력에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 2개 학급을 실험집단과 비교집 단으로 나누어 사전·사후 검사를 실시하고, 양적·질적 분석을 병행하였다. 분석 결과, 시각적 표현을 활용한 실험집단의 비례추론 능력이 비교집단에 비해 유의미 하게 향상되었으며, 특히 결측값 처리, 양적 비교, 비비례 상황 유형에서 큰 차이가 나타났다. 또한 실험집단 학생들은 다양한 비례 관련 문제 해결 과정에서 비형식적 전략을 효과적으로 활용하였고, 시각적 표현이 비례 관계 이해를 돕고 오류를 줄이 며 문제 해결 전략의 다양성을 확장하는 데 기여함이 확인되었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 비례 학습에서 시각적 표현 활용에 관한 시사점을 제시하였다.
