This study analyzes the expressions of exoticism and methods of representing the Other in jazz pianist McCoy Tyner’s music, discussing the phenomenon of cultural appropriation. The study examined Tyner’s works in terms of sound, text, and visual expression, and investigated the characteristics and cultural significance of the inherent representation of the Other. The analysis revealed that the exotic elements in Tyner’s music can be interpreted not as simple decontextualized appropriation, but as part of respect for other cultures and artistic exploration. Based on this analysis, the study emphasized the importance of critical awareness and ethical attitudes required when representing other cultures in the music creation process. Furthermore, this study is significant in that it provides implications for the ongoing issues of cultural appropriation in K-pop discourse, which has grown into a global industry, and offers insights for understanding and resolving contemporary cultural conflicts through examining positive examples of cultural exchange from the past.

본 연구는 재즈 피아니스트 매코이 타이너(McCoy Tyner)의 음악에 나타난 이국주 의(exoticism) 표현과 타자 재현 방식을 분석하여, 문화 전유(cultural appropriation) 에 대해 논의하였다. 타이너의 작품을 음향, 텍스트, 시각의 측면에서 살펴보고 타자 재현 방식과 문화적 의미를 탐구하였다. 분석 결과, 타이너의 음악에 나타난 이국적 요소는 단순한 비 맥락적 차용이 아닌 타문화에 대한 존중과 예술적 탐구의 일환으로 해석할 수 있었다. 이러한 분석을 바탕 으로 음악 창작 과정에서 타문화 재현시 요구되는 비판적 인식과 윤리적 태도의 중요 성을 강조하였다. 나아가 본 연구는 글로벌 산업으로 성장한 케이팝(K-Pop) 관련 담론 에서 지속적으로 제기되는 문화 전유에 시사점을 제공하며, 과거의 바람직한 문화교류 사례를 통해 현시대의 문화 갈등을 이해하고 해결할 수 있는 통찰을 제시한다는 점에 서 의의가 있다.
