This study explores the types and nature of microaggressions experienced by young overseas Koreans both in Korea and abroad. Using a qualitative approach, the research examines the lived experiences of six overseas Koreans (one male and five females), aged 1934, who have resided in the United States, China, and Japan for at least ten years. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews, with each participant engaging in more than three individual interviews. The findings reveal that participants encountered distinct forms of microaggressions depending on their location. In Korea, microaggressions were primarily rooted in preconceived notions about overseas Koreans, whereas abroad, they were predominantly related to race and ethnicity. Additionally, the study highlights the psychological distress caused by the persistent and cumulative effects of these microaggressions. By providing an in-depth analysis of these experiences, this research aims to contribute to a broader understanding of the marginalization faced by the 2.5 million overseas Koreans and to advocate for greater awareness and inclusion of this minority group in both Korean and international contexts.

본 연구의 목적은 재외국민 청년이 국내와 해외에서 겪는 미세차별 즉, 마이크로어 그레션(microaggressions) 경험에 대한 탐구를 통해 재외국민 청년이 겪는 차별의 유 형과 특성에 대해 이해하는 데에 있다. 연구 참여자는 미국, 중국, 일본, 동남아 등에서 최소 10년 이상을 거주한 경험이 있는 만 19세~34세 연령층의 재외국민 청년 6명(남 1 명, 여 5명)이다. 질적사례연구 방법을 취하여 각 연구 참여자당 3회 이상의 반구조화 된 심층 면담을 개별적으로 실시하여 연구 참여자가 겪은 마이크로어그레션의 내용 및 맥락에 대한 질적자료를 수집하였고 그 유형과 특성에 대해 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 재 외국민은 국내와 해외에서 다양한 유형의 마이크로어그레션을 경험하고 있으며 환경 에 따른 마이크로어그레션 경험의 유형과 특성의 차이가 있음을 발견하였다. 국내에서 는 재외국민에 대한 선입견으로 인하여 발생하는 마이크로인밸리데이션 유형이 가장 많았고, 해외에서는 인종 및 민족과 관련된 마이크로인설트와 마이크로어설트 유형이 많은 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 재외국민 청년은 국내와 해외에서 겪은 반복적이고 지속 적인 마이크로어그레션으로 인한 심리적 고통을 겪고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 나날이 그 수가 증가하지만 우리 사회에서 소외된 250만 재외국민의 현주소를 조명하 고 이들의 마이크로어그레션 경험의 유형과 특성에 대한 심층분석을 통해 재외국민에 대한 인식 개선과 차별 감소를 촉구하는 데에 의의가 있다.
