Objectives This study explores how the Trump administration politicized sport as a tool for domestic nationalism and international diplomacy, and examines its impact on South Korea’s middle-power sports diplomacy. Methods Using case study analysis, the research investigates key events—NFL protests, the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, NBA-China tensions, and athlete activism. These are interpreted through soft power, cultural diplomacy, and sports nationalism frameworks. Results The study finds that the Trump administration utilized sport as a domestic political tool, reinforcing nationalist sentiment and framing athlete activism as unpatriotic. This politicized approach reflected a shift away from soft power diplomacy toward confrontational symbolism. In contrast, middle powers like South Korea have approached sports diplomacy as a means of fostering dialogue, promoting international norms, and enhancing global cooperation, highlighting a strategic divergence in the use of sport in foreign policy. Conclusions The politicization of sport under Trump presents both challenges and opportunities for South Korea. To respond, Korea must strengthen sports diplomacy rooted in neutrality, human rights, and multilateral cooperation, especially amid a shifting global order.

이 연구의 목적은 트럼프 행정부가 스포츠를 국내 정치 및 외교 전략의 도구로 어떻게 정치화하였는 지를 분석하고, 이러한 변화가 한국의 중견국 스포츠 외교에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지를 고찰하는 것이다. NFL 시위, NBA-중국 갈등, 선수들의 정치적 발언 등 주요 사건들을 중심으로 사례분석을 실시하였으며, 분석의 이론적 틀로는 소프트파워 이론, 문화외교, 스포츠 내셔널리즘 개념을 활용하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 트럼프 행정부는 스포츠를 국내 민족주의 정서 고취 및 반대 의견 억제의 수단으로 활용하였으며, 이를 통해 스포츠의 정치화를 적극 추진한 것으로 나타났다. 선수들의 사회참여 활동은 비애국적 행위로 규정 되었고, 스포츠는 상징조작의 장으로 변모하였다. 둘째, 한국과 같은 중견국은 스포츠를 국제 규범 확산 과 다자 협력의 플랫폼으로 활용하고 있으며, 이는 미국의 대립적 접근과 대비된다. 이러한 결과는 스포 츠 외교의 전략적 방향이 국가의 외교 철학에 따라 상이하게 나타날 수 있음을 보여준다. 시사점으로 한 국은 정치적 중립성, 인권, 다자주의에 기반한 스포츠 외교 전략을 강화함으로써 변화하는 국제 질서 속에서 중견국으로서의 외교적 위상을 제고할 필요가 있음을 제언하였다.
