This study aims to explore the essence of Christian small group communities as presented in Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Life Together(Gemeinsames Leben), and to propose a practical ecclesiological discourse for the contemporary church based on this exploration. Since the 1960s, Korean churches have achieved remarkable quantitative growth by adopting small groups as core strategies for discipleship and evangelism. However, this growth-oriented, faith-centered, church-centered, and organizational paradigm has often led to the weakening of the intrinsic meaning and function of small groups. In particular, the COVID-19 pandemic, which restricted large-scale worship gatherings, has brought renewed attention to the role of small groups and highlighted the need to reestablish them as a long-term ministerial strategy. Small groups should not be viewed merely as tools for church growth or pastoral programming; rather, they serve as essential spaces for embodying the Christian life and function as “the little church within the church” (ecclesiola in ecclesia). Bonhoeffer asserts that genuine Christian community is possible only in Christ, emphasizing that fellowship grounded not in human intimacy but in the grace of Christ constitutes the essence of community. First, mutual service goes beyond acts of charity to encompass a humble and loving attentiveness to others. Bonhoeffer identifies listening, offering small helps, and bearing one another’s burdens as central expressions of service. Second, confession and forgiveness are essential pathways to freedom and reconciliation within the community. As believers confess their sins and receive forgiveness, the community becomes a space of grace where spiritual healing occurs. Third, shared suffering forges deep bonds within the community. When believers participate in one another’s pain and hardship, the church functions as the body of Christ in its fullness. Bonhoeffer emphasizes that bearing suffering together is central to the identity of Christian community and is a path to its spiritual maturation. From these insights, this study proposes the following practical discourses: First, small group communities embody Christ-centered hospitality, which calls for self-emptying and makes true unity and welcome possible only in Christ. Second, service as a way of life reveals that the leader is not an authority figure but one who serves from the lowest place within the community. This is manifested in a posture of listening, offering small assistance, and responsibly sharing others’ burdens. Third, prayer as soul care enables the community to unite with Christ through the Psalms and to engage in intercessory prayer as a form of spiritual support.

본 연구의 목적은 디트리히 본회퍼(Dietrich Bonhoeffer)의 저서 『성도의 공동생활』 (Gemeinsames Leben)을 중심으로 기독교 소그룹 공동체의 본질을 모색하여 이를 바 탕으로 현대 교회의 실천적 담론을 제시하는 것이다. 한국 교회는 1960년대 이후 소 그룹을 제자훈련과 전도의 핵심 전략으로 삼아 눈에 띄는 양적 성장을 이루었으나, 성장 중심, 신앙 중심, 교회 중심, 조직 중심의 패러다임에 매몰되면서 소그룹 본연의 의미와 기능이 약화되는 문제도 나타났다. 특히 팬데믹 이후 대규모 예배가 제한되면 서 소그룹의 중요성이 재조명되었고, 교회는 소그룹을 장기적 사역 전략으로 재정립 할 필요성을 인식하게 되었다. 소그룹은 교회의 성장 전략이나 목회 프로그램을 위한 수단이 아닌, 그리스도인의 삶을 구현하는 핵심적 공간이자 ‘교회 안의 작은 교회 (ecclesiola in ecclesia)’이다. 본회퍼는 진정한 기독교 공동체는 그리스도 안에서만 하 나가 될 수 있다고 보며, 인간적 친밀감이 아닌 그리스도의 은혜를 매개로 한 교제가 공동체의 본질임을 강조한다. 둘째, 상호 섬김은 단순한 봉사를 넘어, 겸손과 사랑으 로 서로를 돌보는 행위다. 본회퍼는 경청, 작은 도움, 타인의 짐을 함께 지는 책임적 태도를 섬김의 핵심으로 본다. 셋째, 고백과 용서는 공동체 내에서의 자유와 화해의 길이다. 죄를 고백하고 용서할 때, 공동체는 은혜의 공간이 되고 신자들은 영적 회복을 경험한다. 넷째, 함께하는 고난은 공동체의 깊은 연대를 형성한다. 신자들이 서로 의 고난과 아픔을 나눌 때, 교회는 예수 그리스도의 몸으로서 온전한 기능을 하게 된 다. 본회퍼는 고난을 함께 짊어지는 것이 신앙 공동체의 본질임을 강조하며, 이를 통 해 공동체의 영적 성장이 이루어진다고 본다. 실천적 담론으로는, 첫째, 소그룹 공동 체에는 예수 그리스도를 통한 타자 중심의 환대가 있다. 이는 각 개인의 자아를 비우 고 그리스도 안에서만 진정한 연합과 환대가 가능함을 의미한다. 둘째, 삶의 실천으로 서의 섬김은 리더가 권위자가 아니라 공동체의 가장 낮은 자리에서 섬기는 존재임을 보여준다. 이는 경청, 작은 도움, 타인의 짐을 함께 지는 책임적 태도로 구체화된다. 셋째, 영혼 돌봄으로서의 기도는 공동체가 시편을 통해 예수 그리스도와 연합하며, 중 보 기도를 통해 영적 돌봄을 실천하는 것이다. 본 고를 통해 소그룹 공동체가 예수 그리스도를 중심으로 회복하며 성장할 수 있도록 돕고자 하는 데 있다.
