On December 3, 2024, President Yoon Suk Yeol declared a state of emergency, plunging South Korea into extreme turmoil. Subsequently, the national opinion sharply divided, with some defining the declaration as the “12·3 Rebellion” and attempting to impeach President Yoon, while others opposed impeachment and defended the president. The Korean Church, which should be proclaiming the message of the gospel and reconciliation through communication with the times and prophetic spirituality based on God's Word, failed to take any action. This was due to the tarnished image and damaged spiritual leadership of the church, stemming from its insufficient fulfillment of social responsibilities and scandals such as church inheritances, financial corruption, and sexual misconduct in the midst of its rapid growth since the 1980s. The National Prayer Meeting developed from the unique prayer spirituality of the Korean Church and the movement of prayer centers, playing a pivotal role in the aftermath of liberation and the Korean War. The social chaos and national crisis created the fundamental cause that led the people of the Korean Church to pray not only individually but also together. The National Prayer Meeting is rooted in patriotism for the nation and people and a faith that appeals for grace and help to God above all else. However, due to the secularization of the Korean Church and the spread of affluence and materialism driven by its entry into developed nations, the momentum of the National Prayer Meeting has weakened significantly compared to the past. In the past, the negative image of prayer centers, influenced by the distortion of cult-like doctrines and unhealthy mysticism in unauthorized prayer centers, was formed, which led to skepticism about healthy prayer centers in mainstream denominations. Today’s National Prayer Meeting must also review its gospel-based foundation to strengthen its foundation. A well-prepared National Prayer Meeting, thoughtfully designed to embrace biblical teachings, can serve the role of comforting the weary souls of people today through the gospel message. The National Prayer Meeting must analyze the current situation of the times rationally, diagnose the root causes of the problems, and bring together prayerful responses to resolve political and social conflicts, thus improving the internal image of the Korean Church. Externally, it should also be used as a platform for global missionary work by spreading the spirit of prayer widely. Spirituality is a product of the times and society, which requires expressions and practices that align with the new era and society, while maintaining its essence to ensure continuity. Therefore, the National Prayer Meeting must be a means to address the spiritual needs of people in this day and age and enrich their emotional well-being through cultural compensation. It should carry out its mission as a faith community under a rational catchphrase, gathering the members of the Korean Church while constantly checking its existential significance and purpose, and building its foundation upon the gospel.

2024년 12월 3일 윤석열 대통령이 선포한 비상계엄 이후 국론은 계엄 선포를 12·3 내란으로 규정하며 윤 대통령에 대한 탄핵을 시도하는 측과 대통령에 대한 탄핵 반대 를 주장하며 맞서는 측으로 극명하게 나뉘었다. 하지만 한국교회는 아무런 조치를 취 하지 못하였는데, 이는 1980년대 이후 한국교회의 급격한 성장의 뒤안길에서 사회적 책임 수행 미흡과 대형교회의 세습과 재정비리, 성추문 등으로 인해 실추된 이미지와 영적 지도력 손상에 기인한 것이다. 구국기도회는 한국교회 특유의 기도 영성과 기도 원 운동 등을 토양 삼아 발전한 것이다. 해방과 한국전쟁 이후 어지러운 사회적 상황 과 국가적 위기의 상황은 한국교회 교인들로 하여금 개인적일 뿐만 아니라 함께 모여 기도하도록 하는 근원적 원인으로 작용하였기 때문이다. 구국기도회는 나라와 민족을 위한 애국심과 다른 어떤 대상보다도 하나님께 은혜와 도움을 호소하는 신앙심에 뿌 리를 내리고 있지만 한국교회의 세속화 및 선진국 진입으로 인한 풍요 및 물질주의 사조의 만연으로 인해 구국기도회의 동력은 과거에 비하여 상당히 약화되었다. 과거 무자격 기도원의 사이비적 교리의 왜곡과 불건전한 신비주의의 강조로 인해 주류 교 단에 속한 교회의 건전한 기도원에 대한 부정적 이미지를 형성했던 사례를 통해 오늘 날 구국기도회 역시 복음적 토대를 점검하여 그 기반을 확고히 할 것이 요구된다. 충 분히 성경의 가르침을 수용하도록 사려 깊게 준비된 구국기도회는 복음을 통해 현대 인의 곤고한 심령을 어루만지는 역할을 수행할 수 있기 때문이다. 따라서 시대적 상황을 냉철히 분석하여 문제의 원인을 진단하여 이에 대한 합리적인 대응안을 가지고 함께 기도함으로써 정치 사회적 갈등을 해소하는 장으로 활용하여 대내적 한국교회의 이미지를 개선해야 하며, 대외적으로도 기도의 영성을 널리 알려서 세계적인 선교 사 역을 수행하는 발판으로 삼아야 한다. 영성은 시대 및 사회의 산물로서 새로운 시대 와 사회에 부합되는 표현과 실천을 요구하는 동시에 그 본질을 유지해야 지속성을 확 보할 수 있기 때문에 구국기도회는 현대인들의 영적 필요는 물론 문화적 보상을 통해 정서적 풍요로움을 확충하는 수단이 되어야 하며, 시대와 소통하며 합리적인 캐치프 레이즈 아래에 한국교회의 교인들을 모으는 신앙 공동체적 사명을 수행하는 동시에 끊임없이 그 존재적 의의와 목적을 점검하며 복음 위에 그 기초를 세워야 한다.
