This study aims to explore how international students perceive Korean speaking by analyzing metaphorical expressions. A qualitative approach was adopted to examine the internal cognitive and emotional perspectives of 15 international students enrolled at a four-year university in Korea. Using an open-ended questionnaire, the collected data were analyzed and categorized into 12 types of speaking metaphors. The findings revealed that students viewed speaking as psychological barriers such as “a wall” or “a test,” while others perceived it as tools for growth and interaction, such as “a bridge,” “a staircase,” or “a musical performance.” The study concludes that these metaphors reflect speaking as not merely a linguistic skill but as a medium for identity construction, emotional expression, and sociocultural integration. The results suggest the necessity of designing learner-centered speaking instruction that considers the diverse perceptions and experiences of learners.

본 연구는 외국인 유학생이 ‘한국어 말하기’를 어떻게 인식하고 있는지를 은유 분석을 통해 탐색함으로써, 학습자의 내면적 경험과 인지적 태도를 심층적으로 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 국내 4년제 대학에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생 15명을 대상으로 질적 연구를 실시하였으며, 개방형 질문을 통해 수집한 은유 표현을 주제 분석하 여 12개의 유형으로 분류하였다. 그 결과, 유학생들은 ‘말하기’를 ‘벽’, ‘시험’과 같이 심리적 장벽으로 인식하기도 했고, ‘다리’, ‘계단’, ‘연주’ 등 상호작용과 성장의 수단으로 인식하기도 하였다. 본 연구는 말하기에 대한 은유가 단순한 언어기능을 넘어 정체성 형성, 정서적 표현, 사회문화적 통합과 밀접하게 연관되어 있음을 보여주며, 학습 자 중심의 말하기 교육 설계 필요성을 시사한다.
