The purpose of this study is to analyse the current status and characteristics of exhibition and cultural facility called Museum Insel Hombroich in Neuss, Germany, to explore ways to develop exhibition and cultural facilities suitable for local areas in Korea. The results are as follows. First, the exhibition and cultural facilities in Korea are continuously increasing. In particular, since 2007, the number of exhibition and cultural facilities in local areas has increased more than in the metropolitan area and large cities, therefore it is necessary to consider how to create cultural infrastructure in consideration of the characteristics of regions differentiated from large cities. Second, Museum Insel Hombroich shows the nature-friendly use of 'outdoor space' and 'natural scenery', free 'array of buildings' and 'coil composition', connection between outdoor space and buildings, and non-artificial exhibition characteristics. Museum Insel Hombroich utilizes natural landscapes and freely arranges buildings so that visitors can freely view them. To this end, buildings and external sculptures were arranged in consideration of the surrounding environment, and the movement was organized so that visitors could move freely and enjoy the exhibition. This makes it possible to create an appropriate exhibition and cultural facility considering the characteristics of the region by utilizing outdoor spaces in large-scale target areas in local areas, which have different conditions from exhibition and cultural facilities in large cities with high building-to-land ratios and meticulous planning. In this way, Museum Insel Hombroich possesses various characteristics that can be reflected in the creation of local exhibition and cultural facilities, and it was intended to summarize these characteristics in this study.
