Cheon Geum-seong is established as a pioneer of Korean maritime novels, building the genre of 'maritime experiential literature' as a form of maritime literature. His novels vividly depict the confrontation between humans and nature through survival and struggle at sea, delivering a profound resonance to readers by expanding individual experiences into collective narratives. Experiential literature focuses on securing authenticity and vividity based on facts directly experienced by the author, thereby gaining literary vitality. Cheon Geum-seong's works well capture the characteristics of maritime literature in that they demonstrate unique value by deepening experiences and giving them literary form, rather than merely arranging factual elements or settling for loose plot construction. In particular, he realizes the uniqueness and dynamism of the maritime space by narrativizing the arduous labor, extreme situations, and daily life experienced in deep-sea fishing grounds. His works well demonstrate the characteristics of maritime literature formed through the accumulation of continuous and repeated experiences beyond simple, one-time experiences. In maritime literature, the sea functions as more than just a space and becomes an arena where humans and nature, survival and death, struggle and reflection intersect, and Cheon Geum-seong's works most vividly reveal these characteristics. This study aims to analyze the literary characteristics and value of Cheon Geum-seong's experiential literature and, through this, illuminate the possibilities and significance of maritime literature as distinct from other literary genres.

천금성은 한국 해양소설의 선구자로 ‘해양 체험문학’을 구축한 작가로 자리매김해 있다. 그 의 소설은 바다에서의 생존과 투쟁이라는 인간과 자연의 대립을 생생하게 그려내며, 개인적 체험을 넘 어 집단적 서사로 확장함으로써 독자들에게 깊은 울림을 전달한다. 체험문학은 작가가 직접 경험한 사 실에 기반해 사실성과 생동감을 확보하며, 이를 통해 문학적 생명력을 획득하는 데 중점을 둔다. 천금 성의 작품은 단순히 사실적 요소들의 배열이나 허술한 플롯 구성에 멈추지 않고, 체험을 심화시키고 문 학적으로 형상화함으로써 독창적 가치를 발휘한다는 점에서 해양문학 장르의 특징을 잘 담아내고 있다. 특히, 원양어업 현장에서 겪은 고단한 노동과 극한의 상황, 그리고 바다에서의 일상을 구체적으로 서사 화하여 바다라는 공간의 고유성과 역동성을 구현하고 있다. 그의 작품은 단순하고 일회적인 경험을 넘 어 지속적이고 반복된 체험의 축적을 통해 형성된 해양문학의 특성을 잘 보여준다. 해양문학은 바다가 단순한 공간을 넘어 인간과 자연, 생존과 죽음, 투쟁과 성찰이 교차하는 장으로 기능하며, 천금성의 작 품은 이러한 특성을 가장 생동감 있게 드러낸다. 본 연구는 천금성의 체험문학을 중심으로 그의 문학적 특징과 가치를 분석하고, 이를 통해 여타의 문학 장르와 차별되는 해양문학의 가능성과 의의를 조명하 고자 한다.
