This paper focuses on ESG as an index for sound corporate finance operations, with a particular emphasis on investment inefficiency. The study examines the relation between ESG and investment inefficiency, furthermore it investigates on moderating effect of ESG. The study utilizes financial data from Korean companies listed on the KRX(Korea Exchange) over the period from 2012 to 2021. The empirical findings indicate that, first, ESG has little impact on investment inefficiency but minute level on over-investment. Second, agency cost problem is not evident in the Korean market, particularly in the area of investment inefficiency. Finally, ESG demonstrates a moderating effect interaction with debt leading to improved investment efficiency. As a non-financial performance metric, ESG is still evolving in its role in representing corporate financial performances.

본 연구는 비재무적 지표인 ESG가 기업의 재무성과에 영향을 미칠 수 있는지 연구 하였다. 특히 ESG가 기업의 투자효율성에 미치는 영향에 대하여 분석하였다. 높은 ESG 등급을 받은 회사의 투자효율성에 대하여 실증분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구는 우리나라 KRX(유가증권시장)에 상 장된 제조업을 하는 기업들을 대상으로 2012년부터 2021년까지 10년간 이들 기업들의 재무데이터와 ESG 데이터를 사용하였다. 실증분석결과, 첫째, ESG는 투자비효율성에 영향을 거의 미치지 않았다. 따라서, ESG와 투자의 비효율성과 관련성은 미미하였다. 통합ESG지표의 경우 과대 투자(Overinvestment)와 정(+)의 관계를 보이기는 하였으나, 전반적으로 미미한 수준에 머물렀다. 둘째, 대리인문제와 투자비효율성과는 관련 성이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 부채비율과 상호작용하여 ESG는 기업의 투자의 비효율성을 낮추는 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. ESG지표가 기업의 재무적인 성과를 충분히 설명하고 있지는 못하지만, 지속적인 ESG의 평가와 기업들의 노력으로 점차 중요한 지표로서 작 용할 것이라고 사료된다.
