This study investigates how the postdramatic narrative structure of The Vagina Monologues, a play by Eve Ensler, functions in the construction of female subjectivity. While previous research has primarily focused on the work’s social impact or its performance practices, this paper centers on the internal structural strategies of the text itself, examining how elements such as decentering, polyphony, and intertextuality dismantle the conventional linear narrative and create an open expressive space that embraces pluralistic female experiences. Through its fragmented format composed of multiple monologues, the play dismantles a singular perspective and juxtaposes diverse gendered experiences, thereby establishing structural conditions under which female subjectivity can be autonomously narrativized. This narrative not only evokes emotional empathy in the audience but also prompts cognitive shifts, encouraging a reconsideration of one’s gender identity and social position. The coexistence of divergent voices within the narrative structure enables the audience to critically distance themselves from normative gender ideologies. In this process, the text no longer functions as a closed artistic artifact, but rather as a narrative apparatus that transforms personal experiences into public discourse through interaction with the audience. Notably, the global dissemination of this work through the “V-Day” movement demonstrates that diverse female experiences can intersect, be recontextualized, and evolve into social action even without a central narrative. In conclusion, the narrative structure of The Vagina Monologues is not a mere formal experiment; rather, through its multilayered trajectory—from textual composition to audience reception and social dissemination—it reveals the performative and strategic potential of theatre to represent female subjectivity and to connect individual experiences with collective practice. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how "Bergeiner Monologue" subverts the expression paradigm of traditional plays through a decentralized narrative structure and builds the visibility of female subjects. Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to examine how such a narrative structure mediates the social expression of female subjectivity in the process of expanding into the public domain.

본 연구는 이브 엔슬러(Eve Ensler)의 희곡 <버자이너 모놀로그>(The Vagina Monologues)를 분석 대상 으로 삼아, 작품이 지닌 후연극적 서사 구조가 여성 주체성 구성에 어떠한 역할을 수행하는지를 규명했 다. 기존 연구들이 사회적 영향이나 공연 실천에 초점을 맞춘 반면, 본고는 텍스트 내부의 구조적 전략에 주목하여, 탈중심성, 다성성, 상호텍스트성 등의 요소가 어떻게 전통적인 선형 서사를 해체하고, 여성의 다원적 경험을 수용할 수 있는 개방적 표현 공간을 창출하는지를 고찰했다. 이 작품은 단편화된 다중 독 백 형식을 통해 단일 시각을 해체하고, 상이한 젠더 경험들을 병치함으로써 여성 주체성이 자율적으로 서사화될 수 있는 구조적 조건을 마련했다. 이러한 서사는 관객에게 정서적 공감뿐 아니라 인지적 전환 의 계기를 제공하며, 개인의 젠더 정체성과 사회적 위치를 재고하게 한다. 서로 다른 목소리들이 병존하 는 서사 구조는 관객이 기존의 성별 규범을 거리 두고 비판적으로 인식할 수 있도록 유도했다. 이 과정 에서 텍스트는 더 이상 닫힌 예술 작품이 아닌, 관객과의 상호작용을 통해 사적 경험을 공적 담론으로 이행시키는 서사적 장치로 작동했다. 특히 이 작품이 ‘V-Day’ 운동으로 확장되며 세계적으로 재현된 사 례는 특정한 중심 서사 없이도 다양한 여성 경험이 서로 교차, 재맥락화되며 사회적 실천으로 발전할 수 있음을 보여준다. 결론적으로, <버자이너 모놀로그>의 서사 구조는 단순한 형식적 실험이 아니라, 텍스트 의 구성에서 관객의 수용을 거쳐 사회적 파급에 이르는 다층적 과정을 통해 여성 주체성을 재현하고, 개 별 경험과 집단 실천을 연결하는 연극의 수행적, 전략적 가능성을 드러냈다. 이에 본 연구는 <버자이너 모놀로그>가 탈중심화된 서사 구조를 통해 전통 연극의 표현 패러다임을 어떻게 전복하며, 여성 주체의 가시성을 어떤 방식으로 구축하는지를 분석하고자 한다. 나아가 이와 같은 서사 구조가 공적 영역으로 확장되는 과정에서 여성 주체성의 사회적 표현을 어떻게 매개하는지를 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다.
