This study presents how the historical experiences of the Korean diaspora can serve as a source for cultural content creation, based on oral history interviews with 25 overseas Koreans from five countries in Latin America. Furthermore, it explores the potential of oral history to expand when combined with digital media. Oral history is a historical research method in which an interviewee’s memories and experiences are digitally recorded through conversations with an interviewer. It differs from traditional documentary records by emphasizing the personal narratives of individuals. Oral history can be integrated with public history for broad public engagement and can be utilized in developing cultural content such as documentaries, exhibitions, literature, and festivals. This study specifically focuses on oral history interviews conducted with overseas Koreans in Cuba and Mexico. The primary sources include interviews detailing the lives of Korean immigrants, tracing their migration to Mexico’s henequen plantations in 1905 and their subsequent relocation to Cuba’s sugarcane farms in 1921. The researcher produced a short-form teaser video and 25 summary videos for YouTube based on oral history interviews. One teaser video and one summary video were presented as actual examples. The storytelling elements were categorized into three narrative themes: 1) Piecing Together the Puzzle of the Independence Movement 2) Love Found Across Half the Globe 3) Seeking New Forms of Connection. In conclusion, oral history becomes more meaningful when transformed into cultural content rather than being confined to historical documentation. Although oral history archives are continuously expanding, it is regrettable that research remains primarily within the domain of historians. The study underscores the necessity of integrating oral history research with storytelling tools and cultural content development, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in this field.

본 연구는 중남미 지역 5개 국가의 재외동포 25명의 구술채록을 바탕으로, 한민족 디아스포라의 역사 경험이 문화콘텐츠 창작의 원천이 될 수 있음을 제시한다. 또한 구술채록이 디지털 매체와 결합하여 확장 가능성을 지니고 있음을 전망한다. 구술채록은 역사 연구 방법의 하나로, 구술자와 면담자가 인터뷰를 통해 구술자의 기억과 경험을 디지털 방식으로 기록하는 과정이다. 구술채록은 기존의 문헌 자료와 차별성을 가지며, 개인의 기억을 구술을 통해 전달한다는 특징을 가지고 있다. 구술채록은 공공역사와 결합하여 대중적인 활용이 가능하며, 다큐멘터리·전시·문학·축제 등의 문화콘텐츠 개발로 이어질 수 있다. 이 글은 중남미 지역 중에서 쿠바와 멕시코 재외동포 구술채록을 중심으로 예시하였다. 1905년 에네켄 농장으로 이주한 멕시코 이민의 역사와 1921년 쿠바 사탕수수 농장으로 재이주한 역사를 배경으로 재외동포의 삶을 인터뷰한 내용이 1차 자료가 되었다. 연구자는 구술채록을 통해 숏폼 콘텐츠인 예고 영상을 제작하였고, 25편의 유튜브용 요약 영상을 제작하였다. 이에 예고 영상 1편과 요약 영상 1편을 실제 사례로 제시하고 스토리텔링이 가능한 이야기 자원을 1)독립운동의 퍼즐을 찾아, 2)지구 반 바퀴를 돌아서 찾은 사랑, 3)새로운 관계의 모색이라는 세 가지 내용으로 정리하였다. 결론적으로, 구술채록은 단순한 역사 기록을 넘어 문화콘텐츠로 변환될 때 더 큰 의미를 가진다. 구술채록이 다양하게 축적되고 있지만 역사학자들 중심으로만 연구되는 점은 안타까운 점이다. 구술채록을 스토리텔링 도구로 활용할 수 있는 연구와 콘텐츠 개발이 앞으로 진행되기를 기대하며 구술채록과 문화콘텐츠 연구의 융합이 필요함을 강조한다.
