Contemporary Worship, which has proliferated across global evangelical churches since the latter half of the twentieth century, is characterized by its active use of popular musical elements, informal and flexible structures, and an atmosphere emphasizing congregational participation. While this worship style has become a normalized practice in many churches-particularly contributing to accessibility for younger generations and those on the periphery of faith-it is often adopted based on cultural adaptability and pragmatic aims, without sufficient theological or liturgical reflection. The emotional orientation, excessive reliance on music, and structural fluidity of such worship practices risk obscuring the essential meaning of Christian worship. This calls for a renewed theological inquiry into how Contemporary Worship can be reoriented toward a gospel-centered direction. This study critically examines the identity and practices of Contemporary Worship using three theological definitions of worship as an analytical framework: ① the encounter between God and His people, ② the enactment of the gospel, and ③ a public liturgy for the kingdom of God. By employing this framework, the study seeks to move beyond purely formal or emotive experiences and to present a concrete path toward a more communal and gospel-shaped worship. The paper proposes three practical directions for the renewal of Contemporary Worship. First, it calls for a theological evaluation of the lyrical content of contemporary worship songs, ensuring doctrinal coherence and gospel centrality. Second, it explores the creative integration of the traditional fourfold ordo-Gathering, Word, Table, and Sending-within the flexible formats of contemporary worship. Third, it argues that Contemporary Worship must be understood and practiced as liturgy-namely, the priestly work performed on behalf of the other. This study unfolds through an integrative approach that encompasses liturgical theology, practical theology, and pastoral insight. It aims to contribute to a more reflective and gospel-oriented discourse on Contemporary Worship, ultimately helping the church to remain faithful to its theological essence while engaging the cultural contexts of the present age.

현대 예배(Contemporary Worship)는 20세기 중후반 이후 전 세계 복음주의 교회를 중심으로 확산된 새로운 예배 양식으로, 대중음악적 요소의 적극적인 활용, 자유롭고 비형 식적인 예배 구성, 회중의 적극적인 참여를 강조하는 분위기 등을 핵심적인 특징으로 삼는 다. 이러한 예배 형태는 오늘날 많은 교회에서 일상화된 실천으로 자리잡았으며, 특히 젊은 세대와 신앙의 주변부에 있는 이들에게 접근성을 높이는 데 기여해 왔다. 그러나 그 신학적 기반이나 예전적 구조에 대한 면밀한 검토 없이, 단지 문화적 적응과 실용주의적 목적에 근거하여 수용되는 경향이 강하다는 비판도 존재한다. 감정 중심의 흐름, 음악에 대한 과도한 의존, 그리고 예배 형식의 유동성은 예배의 본질적 의미를 모호하게 만들 수 있으며, 이에 따라 현대 예배가 복음에 기초한 신학적 방향성을 어떻게 회복할 수 있을지 를 모색하는 것이 요청된다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식 아래, 예배에 대한 세 가지 신학적 정의-① 하나님과 그분 백성 간의 만남, ② 복음의 실행, ③ 하나님 나라를 향한 공적 리터지-를 분석적 틀로 삼아 현대 예배의 정체성과 실천 양식을 비판적으로 고찰한다. 이를 통해 현대 예배가 단순한 형식이나 감성적 경험에 머무르지 않고, 공동체적이고 복음적인 예배로 갱신되기 위한 구체적인 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 본 논문은 현대 예배의 복음적 갱신을 위한 세 가지 실천적 제안을 제시한다. 첫째, 현대 예배에서 사용되는 노래 텍스트의 신학적 정합성과 복음 중심성을 점검하는 작업이 선행되어야 한다. 둘째, ‘모임–말씀–성찬–파송’이라는 전통적인 예전 구조를 현대 예배 의 형식 안에 창의적으로 통합할 가능성을 모색한다. 셋째, 현대 예배는 리터지, 즉 타자를 위한 제사장들의 일로 이해되고 실행되어야 한다. 이와 같은 논의는 예배학적, 실천신학적, 그리고 목회적 통찰을 아우르는 통합적 접근을 통해 전개되며, 현대 예배를 향한 보다 성찰적이고 복음적인 담론 형성에 기여하고자 한다. 본 연구는 궁극적으로 교회가 시대의 문화적 맥락 속에서도 본질을 유지하며, 하나님 앞에 신실하고 공동체적으로 책임 있는 예배를 실현해 나갈 수 있도록 돕는 것을 목적으로 한다.
