This study analyzes the narrative structure of Hyetong-Hangryong in the Sinju section of Samguk Yusa, focusing on the motif of the "gyoryong" (dragon) and interpreting each narrative segment. The central plot of Hyetong-Hangryong consists of four major conflicts with the gyoryong, which have previously been interpreted from various perspectives such as history, religion, and medicine. This paper proposes that Hyetong-Hangryong may have been compiled by integrating independent folktales centered on the figure of Hyetong. In particular, the final narrative of Hyetong-Hangryong, the "Gijang Mountain Tale," is reinterpreted as an independent folktale by comparing its motifs with those found in the Eosan-Bulyoung narrative from the Tapsangpyeon section of Samguk Yusa. Four corresponding motifs were identified through this comparison: the existence of an ancient kingdom (Geochilsan-guk) in the Gijang region, its foundation myth, conflict between humans and the dragon, and the transmission of Buddhist culture. These shared elements suggest that the Gijang Mountain Tale reflects the regional diffusion of esoteric Buddhism (milgyo) and can be regarded as a representative example of the syncretic nature of Buddhist folklore in the provinces. This study ultimately highlights the composite narrative structure of Hyetong-Hangryong and the cultural-historical significance of its conclusion.

본고는 『삼국유사』 신주편 <혜통항룡>을 ‘교룡’ 화소를 중심으로 서사 단락을 구분하 여 각 단락의 의미를 분석하고, 결말부에 해당하는 ‘기장산 설화’의 새로운 해석 가능성 을 탐색한 것이다. <혜통항룡>은 교룡과의 네 차례에 걸친 갈등이 중심 서사를 이루며, 역사․ 종교․ 의학 등 다양한 관점에서 해석되어 왔다. 본고에서는 각각의 설화를 통합적 으로 이해하기 위해 <혜통항룡>이 혜통을 중심으로 한 개별 설화들을 묶어서 편찬하였을 가능성을 제기하였다. <혜통항룡>의 결말부에 등장하는 ‘기장산 설화’는 『삼국유사』 탑상편의 <어산불영> 설화와의 화소 비교를 통해 네 가지 화소가 대응됨을 확인하였다. 이를 바탕으로 기장 지역의 고대국가인 거칠산국과 그 건국 설화, 교룡과 인간의 갈등, 불교문화의 전파 등 을 살피며 ‘기장산 설화’를 독립된 설화로 재조명하였다. <혜통항룡>이 단일 서사가 아 닌 복합 설화 구조를 지니고 있음을 확인하였고, 결말부의 ‘기장산 설화’는 밀교의 교풍 이 지방으로 확산하여 가는 밀교의 무불습합 노정기의 대표적인 설화라 할 수 있다.
