Steph Cha’s novel Your House Will Pay explores themes of racial trauma, intergenerational conflict, and family bonds. Through a cross-cultural perspective, the novel reflects on the Los Angeles riots, examining the grand theme of racial conflict and the pursuit of peace through a micro-level, family-centered lens. The narrative follows two intertwined storylines, adopting the perspectives of Grace Park, the daughter of a Korean immigrant family, and Shawn Matthews, an African American man. This dual perspective serves as a literary strategy to contrast mainstream historical narratives with individual traumatic memories. The novel investigates the enduring trauma stemming from racial conflicts in Los Angeles during the 1990s and its lasting impact on two generations in the 21st century. This paper examines the novel’s portrayal of family relationships, racial identity, and trauma narratives, analyzing the cultural, familial, and psychological dimensions of trauma. Additionally, it explores how fear, pain, and emotional distress shape the lives of those affected, and how the long-term consequences of racial violence are represented and embodied in contemporary literature.
