This paper explores geographical imagination and exciting methods of travel within the realm of classical Korean literature. The study examines major works, including late Joseon-era Hangul long-novels, 17th-century shinseon-jeons (tales of immortals), the 19th-century text Suksunyeom (孰遂念), and the 19th-century novel Namwon-gosa. Section 2 lays the foundation by examining the social atmosphere of late Joseon, where the spread of imaginative travel was fueled by paintings and writings that expressed the desire for travel. Section 3 presents the following key findings: 1. Korean-language long-novels exhibit a diverse range of historical-geographical imagination, often using famous Chinese landmarks as their settings. These narratives reflect the aspirations of late Joseon readers to imagine traveling the world. 2. Hong Gil-ju’s Suksunyeom contains a wide range of material, from concrete geographical knowledge to fantastical journeys. Notably, it transforms the act of imaginative travel into a form of recreational play, which is particularly intriguing. 3. The 19th-century novel Namwon-gosa also vividly expresses imaginative travel. In particular, its preface (序章) employs the rhythm of pansori and famous verses from classical Chinese poetry, presenting the idea of travel as an exhilarating parade. The geographical imagination found in classical Korean literature suggests that the desire for travel has long been one of humanity’s aspirations to transform the world.

이 논문은 ‘한국어문학과 사변적 상상’이라는 기획에 맞추어, 한국 고전문학의 영역에서 ‘지리적 상상과 신나는 여행법’을 폭넓게 살펴본 결과이다. 주요 대상으로 조선후기 국문장편소설, 17세기의 신선전(神仙傳), 19세기 홍길주의 저작 『숙수념(孰遂念)』, 『춘향전』 이본 중 하나인 19세기 『남원고사』를 골라서 고찰했다. 전제가 되는 제2장에서는 『와유록(臥遊錄)』, ｢물외승지기(物外勝地記)｣, ｢사군기행(四郡紀行)｣, ｢강산무진도(江山無盡圖)｣ 등에 근거하여 상상의 여행을 촉발하던 조선후기 사회의 분위기를 살폈다. 17세기의 신선전(神仙傳)에서 나타난 도가적(道家的) 시공간의 상상은, 이후 국문장편소설에 이르면 중국의 명소를 배경으로 한 역사지리적 상상으로 변화되었다. 중국의 강남 및 그 밖의 여러 지역을 배경으로 펼쳐진 서사는 조선후기 독자들의 세계 여행에 대한 상상을 반영한 것이라 해석된다. 홍길주의 저작 『숙수념(孰遂念)』은 구체적인 지리적 지식에서부터 환상의 여행에 이르기까지 다양한 층위의 자료를 간직하고 있는데, 여행의 상상을 도놀이 형태로까지 전환하여 즐기려 한 특징이 발견된다. 『춘향전』 이본의 한 갈래인 『남원고사』도 신나는 상상의 욕구가 드러난 자료이다. 특히 이 소설 속의 서장(序章)은, 판소리의 리듬 및 한시의 명구(名句)를 활용하며 신나는 퍼레이드를 구경하듯이 여행의 상상을 펼쳤다. 한국 고전문학 속에 분포한 지리적 상상은 사변보다는 판타지에 가까운 모습이다. 하지만 이 판타지에는 사변의 요소가 두루 함유되어 있으며, 지리적 상상에 기초한 여행이 이 세계를 변화시켜 온 오랜 갈망 중 하나였음을 짐작하게 한다.
