This study examines the anti-Japanese struggle of Lee Seong-hwa, the commander of the righteous army. Lee Seong-hwa is a native of Gobu-gun, Jeollabuk-do, and appears to have jumped into the righteous army when the country faces a crisis due to 乙巳勒約 and forced abdication of Emperor Gwangmu. He began his activities in earnest from July 1908, and then focused on recruiting munitions to lay the foundation for the struggle until October 1909. And continued to battle the Japanese military and police. In addition, during this process, he sometimes confronted Japanese imperialism in solidarity with other righteous army generals such as Shin Bo-hyeon. Lee Seong-hwa's active areas were concentrated in western Jeollabuk-do and some northern Jeollanam-do areas, including Buan, Jeongeup, Sunchang, Taein, Geumgu, Gimje, Mangyeong, and Damyang, focusing on Gobu, Jeollabuk-do. This is deeply related to the fact that Lee Seong-hwa was from Gobu itself, and most of his subordinates were from western Jeollabuk-do, centering on Gobu. However, Lee Seong-hwa struggled more in battle with the Japanese military and police than Kim Dong-shin and Moon Tae-soo, who were active during the same period. This has to do with the fact that his army is almost entirely made up of peasants. It also seems to be related to the fact that despite the inferiority of the weapon, it was mainly active on flat land. Seong-hwa was a righteous army commander in Honam region and was active mainly in the western part of Jeollabuk-do, and he was a righteous army commander who did not get arrested or surrendered. However, since there were no individual studies on him, we tried to identify his activities that have not been studied so far through this study. In addition, it was intended to contribute to discovering the activities of the heads of righteous army in Jeollabuk-do, which are relatively less known than in Jeollanam-do.

본 연구는 정미의병기 의병장 이성화의 항일투쟁을 살펴본 것이다. 이성화는 전 북 고부군 출신으로, 乙巳勒約과 광무황제의 강제 퇴위 등으로 나라가 위기에 봉착 하자 의병에 뛰어든 것으로 보인다. 그는 1908년 7월부터 본격적으로 활동에 나서 이후 1909년 10월까지 투쟁의 근간을 마련코자 군수품 모집 등에 주력했으며, 지 속적으로 일본 군경과의 교전을 수행했다. 또한 이 과정에서 때때로 신보현 등 다 른 의병장과의 연대 속에서 일제에 맞서기도 하였다. 활동 지역은 전북 고부를 중심으로 부안, 정읍, 순창, 태인, 금구, 김제, 만경, 담 양 등 전북 서부와 일부 전남 북부지역에 집중되어 있었다. 이는 이성화 자체가 고 부 출신이고, 그 부하들도 고부를 중심으로 전북 서부지역 출신이 대부분이었던 것 과 관계가 깊다. 단, 이성화는 동시기 활약했던 의병장 김동신이나 문태수 등에 비해 일본 군경 과의 전투에서 좀 더 고전하는 경향이 있었다. 이는 그의 의진이 거의 농민으로만 구성된 것과 관련이 있고, 또한 무기의 열세에도 불구하고 주로 평지를 중심으로 활약한 것과 관계가 있는 것으로 보인다. 이성화는 호남의병의 일원으로서 전라북도 서부지역을 중심으로 맹활약하였고, 끝내 체포되거나 항복하지 않고 최후를 맞이한 의병장이었다. 하지만 이성화에 대 한 개별 연구가 없었기 때문에 이 연구를 통해 지금까지 연구되지 않은 그의 활동 을 규명하는 한편, 지금까지 전남에 비해 비교적 덜 알려진 전북지역 의병장들의 활약상을 발굴하는데 기여하고자 하였다.
