This study assesses the proficiency and competence of Fire, Emergency, and Security Systems (FESS) designers, operating within the UK intrusion and surveillance sectors. This study was motivated by growing concerns about the competency of FESS sector personnel, as highlighted by the Grenfell Fire incident. The primary goal was to evaluate the risk awareness and risk-based approach among security surveyors who are responsible for designing solutions. A qualitative research methodology was used to gather interview data, with participants from a range of UK private security companies. The data was analysed thematically to determine the existing competence levels of security surveyors, as well as their level of training, qualifications, and experience. This research study not only defines competence in the intrusion and surveillance sectors, but also identifies potential gaps and areas for future improvement. However, the present risk awareness and risk-based approach among those surveyors interviewed was found to be inadequate.
