This study aims to review prior research on local extinction and digital nomads, providing theoretical considerations and proposing solutions. The primary causes of local extinction in South Korea are low birth rates, an aging population, and population concentration in metropolitan regions. To escape the trap of local extinction, it is critical to attract younger generations. However, the ongoing competition among regions to retain or attract permanent residents often results in a zero-sum game. Therefore, efforts should shift from focusing solely on permanent residents to fostering “related populations.” A promising solution, particularly advantageous for South Korea due to its advanced IT infrastructure, is the active attraction of digital nomads. Digital nomads are considered a type of related populations, and as such, this study also includes a theoretical examination of related populations. Digital nomads are individuals who utilize digital devices to work without being constrained by time or location. Despite the geographical nature of the concept, research on digital nomads remains limited in the field of geography. Thus, this study holds significance in proposing digital nomads as a countermeasure to address local extinction.

본 연구는 지방소멸과 디지털 노마드의 선행연구를 검토한 후 이론적 고찰과 함께 해결방안을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 우리나라 지방소멸의 가장 큰 원인은 저출산, 고령화, 수도권으로의 인구 집중이다. 지방소멸의 늪에서 빠져나오기 위해서는 무엇보다도 젊은 층의 유입이 절실한데, 최근까지 이루어지고 있는 지역끼리의 정주인구 뺐고 빼앗기는 제로섬 게임이 될 확률이 높다. 따라서 우리는 더 이상 정주인구가 아닌 관계인구 유치에 힘을 써야한다. 그중 IT가 고도로 발달된 우리나라에게 유리한 해법으로 기존의 소멸 대응 방안들과 달리 보다 적극적인 방안인 디지털 노마드 유치가 있다. 디지털 노마드의 경우 관계인구의 한 종류로서 다루었기 때문에, 관계인구에 대한 이론적 고찰도 행하였다. 여기서 디지털 노마드는 각종 디지털 기기를 가지고 시·공간의 제약 없이 이동하여 업무를 보는 사람을 지칭한다. 이는 IT가 고도로 발달된 우리나라에게 유리한 해법이다. 디지털 노마드는 그 개념 자체가 지리적임에도 불구하고 이를 주제로 다룬 연구는 지리학계에서 아직까지 미흡한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 디지털 노마드를 지방소멸의 대응방안으로 제시한 데에 그 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.
