This study examines the Alexiad (Ἀλεξιάς ) of Anna Komnena (1083~1153) to investigate its hidden authorial messages and her historiographical methodology. She is both a princess of the Komnenian dynasty and the only known female historian of the Byzantine Empire. The Alexiad unveils the reign of Alexios I Komnenos in the format of a biography. It is still loved by the present day researchers and public audience due to its flourishing style of writing, high register of Greek, and vivid incorporation of various ancient Greek literary texts. To fully investigate this text, this study first focuses on the part of history that is absent from the Alexiad. The early history of the House of the Komnenoi, historical background leading up to the imperial ascension of Alexios, and personal biography of Anna are to be examined in the first section of this paper. Then, the structure of the Alexiad and Anna’s making of Alexios’s character are to be discussed. Through this process, this study highlights the ways in which Anna utilized the authorial techniques used for writing the genre of hagiography and historiography to her project. Lastly, the final section deals with Anna’s purpose behind authoring the Alexiad vis-à-vis her actual time of activity. Through these steps, this study highlights the historical role of Anna and the further ways of using her work for future research.

본 연구는 안나 콤니니(1083~1153)가 저술한 역사서 『알렉시아스(Ἀλεξιάς )』의 역사서술법과 작품의 이면을 분석한다. 그녀는 비잔티움 제국 콤니노스 왕조 의 공주이자 비잔티움의 유일한 여성 역사가이다. 『알렉시아스』는 알렉시오스 1세 콤니노스의 치세를 전기 형식으로 풀어냈다. 화려한 문체와 다양한 고대 그리스어 문학 작품을 활용해 저술된 이 역사서는 지금도 비잔티움의 연구자들 에게 사랑받고 있다. 본 연구의 구성은 다음과 같다. 첫 번째 장에서는 작품에 서 누락된 부분을 조명하는 데 집중할 것이다. 『알렉시아스』를 중심으로 여러 사료들을 활용해 초기 콤니노스 가문의 역사, 알렉시오스가 즉위하기 직전까지 의 역사적인 흐름, 그리고 안나의 개인적인 생애를 살펴볼 것이다. 두 번째 장 에서는 『알렉시아스』의 구성과 안나가 묘사한 알렉시오스의 인물상에 대해 다 룰 것이다. 이를 통해 안나가 당대 비잔티움의 성인전과 역사서 서술 방식을 어 떻게 융합해서 자신의 작품에 반영했는지 분석할 것이다. 마지막 장에서는 안나 가 『알렉시아스』를 저술한 의도를 조명해 그녀가 살아온 시대상에 대입할 것이 다. 이러한 과정을 통해 역사가이자 부황의 전기 작가로서 안나의 시대적인 역 할과 『알렉시아스』를 통해 그녀가 전하는 메시지에 대해 분석할 것이다.
