Anyone who pursues virtue will inevitably face temptations. However, throughout the history of the Church, there are numerous stories of individuals who overcame such challenges. In particular, the virtue of chastity—under significant threat in today's world—is frequently tested, yet many stories highlight triumphs in this area. However, because the number is so large, this study will focus on the story of sexual temptation that appears in one of the medieval works, Blessed Jordan's Libellus . The Dominican Order, along with the Franciscan Order, had great influence in medieval Western society. Jordan's Libellus serves as a valuable source of information on the early development of the Dominican Order. However, it remains difficult to find research on this work in Korea. In this study, I will briefly introduce Jordan and his Libellus , focusing specifically on the story of sexual temptation presented in this work. For this process, I will specifically select Libellus from Volume XV of Monumenta Ordinis fratrum praedicatorum historica . The story of sexual temptation in the Libellus revolves around Dominic Friar who shares the same name as the order's founder. He is a figure who appears in the early history of the Dominican order, and although he was not perfect, he was a humble and virtuous person. Within the 50 chapters detailing sexual temptation (a total of 187 words), a woman approaches him under the guise of the Sacrament of confession and attempts to seduce him. However, upon encountering Dominic, his hidden thoughts are exposed, leading to gradual change and culminating in a dramatic act of repentance. On the other hand, Dominic overcomes sexual temptation without external wounds or internal conflict through the humility and virtue he has steadily cultivated. The example set by Dominic holds profound meaning for us today. Regardless of the truth of the miracle, what we should not forget in this story is the humility and virtue of Dominic, who steadily walked the path of virtue despite his shortcomings, and the results that it brought. Temptation can arise at any time and, as highlighted in the Libellus , may even appear disguised within the framework of the Church itself. Sexual temptation in particular is a temptation that can be encountered at any time by those walking the path of chastity, and overcoming such temptation is to steadily cultivate virtue with humility even in situations of shortcomings. The story of sexual temptation in the Libellus offers a glimpse into a cross-section of Western medieval society shaped by Christian faith. It also conveys the message that anyone, regardless of past failures or personal shortcomings, can attain this level of virtue through humility and steady cultivation. Ultimately, it serves as an invitation for readers to embark on the same virtuous path.

덕행을 추구하는 사람은 누구나 유혹을 맞이하지만 교회 역사 안에서는 이러 한 유혹을 이겨낸 사람들의 이야기가 많이 전해진다. 특히 오늘날 많은 위협을 받는 정결의 덕에 대해서도 그 유혹에 대항하여 이겨낸 이야기가 여럿 전해진 다. 하지만 그 양이 워낙 방대하기 때문에 본 연구에서는 중세 작품 가운데 하 나인 복자 요르단의 『리벨루스』를 선정하여, 여기에 나타난 성적 유혹 이야기에 집중해 보고자 한다. 도미니코 수도회는 중세 서구 사회에서 프란치스코 수도회와 더불어 큰 영향 력을 지니고 있었다. 요르단이 작성한 『리벨루스』는 이러한 도미니코 수도회의 초기 모습을 잘 보여주는 자료이지만, 우리나라에서는 이 작품에 대한 연구를 찾아보기 어렵다. 여기서는 요르단과 『리벨루스』에 대한 간략한 소개와 함께 이 책에서 나타난 성적 유혹 이야기에 집중하여 논의를 전개하며, 이 과정을 위해 특별히 『도미니코 수도회의 역사에 관한 기록』 XV권에 수록된 요르단의 『리벨 루스』를 선택한다. 『리벨루스』 속 성적 유혹 이야기는 수도회 창설자와 같은 이름을 지닌 도미 니쿠스 수사와 관련된다. 그는 도미니코 수도회 초기 역사에 등장하는 인물로, 비록 완벽하지는 않았지만, 겸손하고 덕행이 뛰어난 사람이었다. 총 187단어로 구성된 50장의 성적 유혹 이야기에서 한 여인이 고해성사를 핑계로 그에게 다 가와 유혹한다. 하지만 도미니쿠스와의 만남을 통해 감추어져 있던 마음 속 생 각이 그대로 폭로되었고, 점점 변화되어 가다가 마침내 극적인 회개의 길로 돌 아선다. 반면에 도미니쿠스는 꾸준히 길러온 겸손과 덕행을 통해 외면적 상처나 내적 갈등 없이 성적 유혹을 극복한다. 도미니쿠스가 보여준 모습은 오늘날 우리에게도 의미가 있다. 기적의 진실 여부를 떠나 이 이야기에서 잊지 말아야 할 것은, 부족한 가운데에서도 꾸준히 성덕의 길을 걸어온 도미니쿠스의 겸손과 덕행, 그리고 그것이 가져온 결과일 것이다. 유혹은 언제 어느 때든 다가올 수 있으며, 심지어 『리벨루스』에서 언급 된 것처럼 교회 제도를 핑계 삼아 다가오기도 한다. 특별히 성적 유혹은 정결의 길을 걸어가는 이가 언제든 마주칠 수 있는 유혹인데, 이런 유혹을 극복하는 것 은 부족한 상황에서도 꾸준히 겸손하게 덕행을 닦아 가는 것이다. 『리벨루스』의 성적 유혹 이야기는 그리스도교 신앙 안에서 살아가던 서구 중세 사회의 단면 을 엿볼 수 있는 일일 뿐 아니라, 비록 세상 안에서 실패도 경험하고 어떤 면 에서 부족한 인물이라 하더라도 겸손한 마음으로 꾸준히 덕행을 닦아 나가면 누구든지 이런 경지에 오를 수 있다는 것을 전해주며, 더불어 독자들을 이러한 성덕의 길로 나아가도록 초대한다.
