Politics of Education is a discipline which deals with the relationship between education and politics. The problem lies in the fact that education and politics are used to have different meanings by different people and in different contexts. Education may refer to schooling as an institute. Education, however, may refer to the reality which is revealed only through theoretical inquiry. In the same way, politics may refer to an institution or to the theoretical reality. The relationship between the two can be broken down into four types depending on what education and politics refer to respectively; 1) the relationship between education as an institute and politics as an institute; 2) the relationship between education as a theoretical reality and politics as an institute; 3) the relationship between education as an institute and politics as a theoretical reality; and 4) the relationship education as a theoretical reality and politics as a theoretical reality. Politics of Education has been interested in the former two types, paying little attention to the latter two types. This might be due to the immaturity of Education Science and of Political Science. In other words, these two disciplines have not been successful to uncover education and politics as the theoretical realities. This paper argues that Politics of Education needs to pay a balanced attention to all the four types of the relationship between education and politics.

교육정치학이 탐구 대상으로 삼고 있는 교육과 정치는 각각 제도로서의 교육과 이론적 실재로서의 교육, 그리고 제도로서의 정치과 이론적 실재로서의 정치를 가리킨다. 제도로서의 개념과 이론적 실재를 구분하면 교육정치학의 탐구대상인 교육과 정치의 관계는 다음의 네 가지 유형으로 구분될 수 있다 : 첫째, 제도로서의 교육과 제도로서의 정치의 관계; 둘째, 이론적 실재로서의 정치와 제도로서의 교육; 셋째, 이론적 실재로서의 교육과 제도로서의 정치의 관계; 넷째, 이론적 실재로서의 교육과 이론적 실재로서의 정치의 관계. 지금까지 교육정치학의 연구는 만족스러운 수준은 아니지만 위의 탐구영역 가운데 앞의 두 가지에 초점을 맞추어 이루어진 것으로 보인다. 앞으로 한국교육정치학이 발전하려면 이 두 범주 사이의 관계가 균형 있게 고려되어야 한다.
