This study purposes to examine the use of the gayageum in the dance music composed by Choi Ok-sam in CDs 1 and 2 of Legendary Dancer: The Artistic World of Choi Seung-hee. The findings of the study are as follows: The works actively utilizing the gayageum in their composition are Sanjo Dance, Towel Dance, Rhythm and Dance, Dancer in the Mural, and Crane Dance. The gayageum melodies were transcribed based on the audio recordings. The music of Sanjo Dance, Towel Dance, and Rhythm and Dance features melodies based on pentatonic scales such as the gye-myeon-jo, similar to gayageum sanjo, and actively incorporates traditional playing techniques such as the malbalgup (horse hoof) and jipneun (pressing) techniques. In Dancer in the Mural and Crane Dance, modern playing techniques, such as chords and glissandos, similar to those used on the contemporary 25-string gayageum, were utilized to effectively accompany the main melody through rhythm or depict the thematic scenes of the dance. This study sheds light on the dance music composed by Choi Ok-sam in collaboration with the ethnic dancer Choi Seung-hee and hopes to contribute to a deeper understanding of the artistic worlds of both artists.

본 연구는 <전설의 무희: 최승희의 예술세계>의 CD 1, 2 중 최옥삼 작곡의 무용음악 속에서 가야금의 활용을 알아보는 목적을 가진다. 그 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 가야금을 적극적으로 활용하여 작곡된 작품은 <산조춤>, <수건춤>, <장단과 춤>, <벽화의 무희>, <송학춤>의 5곡이며, 음원을 기반으로 가야금 선율을 채보하였다. <산 조춤>, <수건춤>, <장단과 춤>의 음악은 가야금산조와 같이 계면조 등의 5음음계 선법으로 선율이 진행되며 말발굽, 집는 주법 등 전통 가야금 주법을 적극 활용해 작곡되었다. <벽화의 무희>, <송학춤>에서는 화음과 글 리산도 등의 현행 25현 가야금과 같은 현대적 연주법을 활용하여 리듬을 통해 주선율을 효과적으로 반주하거 나 무용의 표제적 장면을 묘사했다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구를 통해 민족무용가 최승희와 함께한 최옥삼 의 무용음악을 조명하고, 이를 통해 두 예술가의 예술세계를 이해하는 데에 도움이 되기 바란다.
