This study investigates the impact of cultural exchanges in ballet between Korea and Russia from 1988 to 1998 on the development of Korean ballet. The analysis draws on various sources, including newspapers, books, academic papers, dance journals, and cultural yearbooks. The findings reveal that these exchanges served as a pivotal moment in overcoming Korea's cultural isolation during the Fifth Republic. Performances by Russian ballet companies in Korea significantly heightened public interest in and demand for ballet. Collaborative efforts with Russian artists markedly improved the technical proficiency and professionalism of Korean ballet companies. Furthermore, the introduction of the Russian ballet education system facilitated systematic professional training in Korea. Collectively, these advancements contributed to the artistic and technical growth of Korean ballet, cementing its position as a globally recognized art form. This study offers critical historical context for understanding the evolution of Korean ballet into a globally recognized art form.

본 연구의 목적은 1988년부터 1998년까지 진행된 한·러 발레 문화교류가 한국 발레에 미친 영향을 고찰하는 것 이다. 연구 방법으로는 역사적 실증 자료를 기반으로 한 문헌 연구 방법을 채택하였으며, 이를 위해 일간지, 저서, 학술 논문, 아르코예술기록원 자료, 문예연감 자료 등을 종합적으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 1988년부터 시작된 한·러 발레 문화교류가 한국 발레에 미친 영향은 첫째, 제5공화국 이전의 문화적 폐쇄주의를 깨뜨리는 데 중요한 전환점이 되었으며, 둘째, 러시아 발레단의 연이은 내한 공연은 한국 발레 예술에 대한 대중적 관심과 수요를 높 이는 데 기여하였다. 셋째, 러시아 예술가들과의 협업은 한국 발레단의 기술적 완성도와 전문성을 크게 향상시켰 고, 넷째, 러시아 발레 교육시스템의 도입은 한국 발레 교육의 체계화와 전문화를 촉진하였다. 마지막으로, 이러한 교류를 통해 한국 발레는 예술적·기술적 성장을 이루었으며, 세계 무대에서 인정받는 예술 형태로 발전하는데 기 여하였다. 본 연구는 한국 발레가 세계적 수준의 예술로 자리매김하는 데 필요한 역사적 맥락을 이해함으로써, 한 국 발레 연구에 새로운 시각을 제시하고 향후 국제 문화교류 연구에도 의미 있는 통찰을 제공하고자 한다.
