Examining Vincent van Gogh as an artist missionary can provide important insights into culture mission of the church. To get these insights, this paper researched Vincent’s letters, his paintings, and literatures about Vincent comprehensively. As a result of the research, Vincent was an artist missionary who was marginalized by the institutionalized church, but instead of becoming a pastor, he became a painter and sought to share the gospel through the art of painting. In addition, we examined his art mission as an artist missionary and found insights into cultural mission, including: 1) art mission beyond church-centered mission; 2) trying to form a Christ-connected community; 3) painting everyday life rather than traditional religious themes; 4) writing letters to supplement the paintings; and 5) demonstrating the Gospel by life as well as by art works. In conclusion, this paper suggests that the church refer to Vincent as an artist missionary as it seeks to conduct culture mission.

빈센트 반 고흐를 예술선교사로서 조명하는 일이 최근 교회가 관심을보이는 문화선교에 중요한 통찰을 제공해 줄 수 있다. 그래서 이러한 통찰을 얻기 위해 고흐의 편지와 그의 그림, 그리고 고흐에 관해 다룬 문헌들을종합적으로 연구하였다. 연구를 수행한 결과, 고흐가 제도권으로부터 소외된 사람이었지만 목회자 대신에 화가가 되어 그림이라는 예술을 통해서 복음을 전하고자 했던 예술선교사로 생각될 수 있었다. 또한, 예술선교사로서의 고흐가 실천한 예술선교를 살펴보았고 그것의 문화선교에로의 통찰을 발견하였는데, 첫째, 교회중심적 선교를 넘어선 예술선교, 둘째, 그리스도-연결적 공동체 형성을 도모함, 셋째, 종교화가 아닌 일상을 그린 그림, 넷째, 편지를 써서 그림의 의미를 보충함, 다섯째, 예술작품만이 아닌삶으로써의 증거다. 결론적으로, 교회가 문화선교를 수행하고자 할 때 예술선교사로서의 고흐를 참조하기를 제안한다.
