The purpose of this study was to find out similarities and differences between chatting and role play in learners’ English compliment responses, and further, compare them with those of English native speakers to understand Korean college students’ pragmatic knowledge of English compliment response. Two groups of subjects participated in data collection with one group taking part in English chatting and the other in English role play, and resulting English compliment response acts were analyzed in terms of four types of strategies (acceptance, amendment, rejection and no acknowledgement), and were also compared to compliment response acts of Americans. As one important finding of the study, a group of subjects in chatting depended mainly on a rejection strategy as a response to English compliment while a group of subjects in role play preferred an acceptance strategy as a rule. Such differences between two groups in L2 compliment response were seen to lie in differences in L2 abilities between groups, not the differing tools of data collection, which showed that role play could become an appropriate data collection method in L2 research on speech acts. Also the pattern of English compliment response by subjects in role play was much similar to the way that Americans responded to compliment, which indicated that subjects in role play seemed to have more developed pragmatic knowledge than subjects in chatting. Based on the findings of the study, it was highlighted that it was important and indispensable to promote the pragmatic ability of Korean learners of English including subjects in chatting who were vulnerable to L1 effects and made pragmatic errors in the performance of L2 compliment response act.

본 연구의 목적은 자연스러운 언어 행위가 가능한 채팅에서 발화된 영어칭찬 응답과 인위적으로 고안된 역할극 속 상황에서 수행된 영어칭찬 응답간 비교를 통해 유사점과 차이점을 알아내고, 나아가 이들 화행을 영어모국어화자들의 칭찬 응답 화행과 비교하 여 한국대학생들의 영어칭찬 응답의 화용적 지식을 기술하고 이해하려는데 있었다. 두 그룹의 피험자들이 자료수집을 위해 각 영어 채팅과 영어 역할극에 참여했으며, 수집 된 영어칭찬 응답 화행은 네 가지 책략 유형들(즉, 수용, 수정, 거절 그리고 불인정)로 분류되었고, 나아가 미국인들의 칭찬 응답 화행과 비교되었다. 주요 연구 결과로, 우선, 채팅에 참여한 피험자 그룹은 영어칭찬에 대한 응대로 주로 거절 책략에 의존하였지만, 역할극에 참여한 피험자 그룹은 상대방의 칭찬에 대한 응답으로 대체로 수용 책략을 선호한 것으로 드러났다. 이러한 두 그룹간 영어칭찬 응대의 차이는 서로 다른 자료수 집 도구 때문이 아닌 두 그룹의 피험자들간 영어 능력의 격차로 인해 초래된 것으로 해 석되었으며, 역할극이 L2화행 연구에서 적절한 자료수집 도구가 될 수 있음을 보여주 었다. 또한, 역할극 속 피험자들의 칭찬 응답 패턴이 미국인들의 칭찬 응대 방식과 매 우 유사했으며, 이는 채팅에 참여한 피험자들보다 역할극 속 피험자들이 상대적으로 높은 L2화용적 지식을 배양했기 때문으로 이해되었다. 이를 통해 L2화행 수행에서 모 국어 영향에 상대적으로 더 취약하여 화용적 오류를 더 자주 발생시켰던 채팅 속 피험 자들과 같은 한국학습자들의 영어칭찬 응답의 화용적 능력 증진에 대한 필요성과 중요 성이 강조되었다.
