This paper analyzed the journey of Ashitaka, the main content of Hayao Miyazaki’s “Princess Mononoke”, through the 12 stages of the hero's journey suggested by Christopher (2013). Based on this, it was confirmed that the cultural memory claimed by Aleida Assmann in the work “Princess Mononoke” plays a major role. Cultural memory was expressed through media of cultural memories such as wounds and places if it played a major role in forming the cause and identity of the character. Hayao Miyazaki transformed the cultural memory of the confrontation between humans and nature into the memory of coexistence through “Princess Mononoke”. Through this, as he said, the identity was transformed by changing from the pressure of the history of making war to the national memory set in the ancient forest. Cultural memory constitutes identity. According to Assmann’s theory of cultural memory, to change identity, memory must be transformed. This study discussed the analysis of the work of “Princess Mononoke” from the perspective of cultural memory, and examined the response to why the stored memory of the cultural prototype should exist and be utilized in the life of the community at the ethnic and regional levels as well as the cultural content production process.

본 연구는 미야자키 하야오 감독의 <모노노케 히메>의 주요 내용인 아시타카의 여정을 크리스토퍼 보글러(2013)가 제시한 영웅의 여정 12단계를 통하여 분석하였다. 이 를 기반으로 작품 <모노노케 히메>에 알라이다 아스만이 주장하는 문화 기억이 주요 한 역할을 하고 있음을 확인하였다. 문화 기억은 등장인물의 행동 원인과 정체성을 형 성하는 주요한 역할을 하고 있으며 몸(신체)의 기억인 상처와 장소와 같은 문화 기억의 매체를 통하여 표현되었다. 미야자키 하야오는 <모노노케 히메>를 통해 인간과 자연 의 대립이라는 문화 기억을 공존이라는 기억으로 개조하였다. 이를 통해 그의 말대로 전쟁을 만든 역사 기억의 압박감으로부터 태곳적 숲을 배경으로 한 민족이라는 전환된 기억으로 해방될 수 있었다. 기억을 전환하며 정체성을 개조한 것이다. 아스만의 문화 기억 이론에 의한다면 문화 기억은 정체성을 이룬다. 그러므로 정체성을 변화시키려면 기억을 개조해야만 한다. 본 연구는 문화 기억의 관점으로 <모노노케 히메>의 작품을 논의하고, 이를 통해 문화 콘텐츠 제작 과정뿐 아니라 민족 단위, 지역 단위의 공동체의 삶 속에 문화원형이라는 저장 기억이 왜 존재해야만 하고 활용되어야 하는지에 관하여 도 고찰하였다.
