This study aims to deeply analyze the correlation between eco-friendly policies and greenwashing in Mega Sports Events (Olympics and World Cup), and to identify the environmental achievements and limitations of these events. As research methods, the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2022 Qatar World Cup were selected as case studies, and a mixed-methods approach combining systematic literature review and big data analysis was employed to compare and analyze the actual effects of eco-friendly policies and greenwashing phenomena. The analysis revealed that while various eco-friendly policies introduced in Mega Sports Events demonstrated positive environmental protection efforts, many remained superficial strategies aimed at enhancing public image. Specifically, eco-friendly policies in the Paris Olympics and Qatar World Cup emphasized carbon emission reduction, the use of recycled materials, and sustainable infrastructure development. However, a gap between actual outcomes and goals was observed, and some policies sparked greenwashing controversies. Accordingly, improvement measures such as environmental impact assessments, strengthening legal accountability, applying eco-friendly certification requirements, enhancing transparency, and encouraging public participation were proposed. It is expected that this study will contribute to the establishment of policies for environmental sustainability.

본 연구는 메가 스포츠이벤트(올림픽과 월드컵)에서 도입된 친환경 정책과 그린워싱 간의 상관관계를 심층적으로 분석하고, 메가 스포츠이벤트의 환경적 성과와 한계를 규명하고자 하였다. 연구 방법으로는 2024년 파리올림픽과 2022 년 카타르 월드컵을 사례로 선정하고, 체계적 문헌 연구와 빅데이터 분석을 활용한 혼합연구방법을 통해 친환경 정책의 실제 효과와 그린워싱 현상을 비교·분석하였다. 분석 결과, 메가 스포츠이벤트에서 도입된 다양한 친환경 정책들이 긍정 적인 환경 보호 노력을 보여주었으나, 상당수가 표면적인 이미지 제고 전략에 그친 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 파리올림픽과 카타르월드컵에서의 친환경 정책들은 탄소 배출 저감, 재활용 자재 사용, 지속 가능한 인프라 구축 등을 강조하였지만, 실제 성과와 목표 간 괴리가 존재하였으며, 일부 정책은 그린워싱 논란을 불러일으켰다. 이에 따라 환경 영향 평가, 법적 책임 강화, 친환경 인증 요건 적용, 투명성 강화, 대중 참여 유도 등의 개선 방안을 제시하였으며, 본 연구가 환경적 지속 가능성을 위한 정책 수립에 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.
