In his book 『Space and Place』, Yi-Fu Tuan said, "Conservation arises from the need for real objects that mean identity, and old structure must be preserved for future generations because they are the achievements of our ancestors with architectural value.“ Until May 2024, Korea's cultural heritage management was a comprehensive legal system that included all types, intangible, and natural heritage under the Cultural Heritage Protection Act. In 2024, the Cultural Heritage Administration changed its name to the National Heritage Administration, and under 『the Framework Act on National Heritage』, 「the Act on the Preservation and Utilization of Cultural Heritage」 , 「the Act on the Conservation and Promotion of Intangible Heritage」 , and 「the Act on the Conservation and Utilization of Natural Heritage」 began to be enacted and managed. However, it is still under a 'focused protectionism system' that intensively manages only designated cultural heritage. The value of cultural heritage designation must have historical, artistic, and academic value. In this regard, the historical and academic values of Imsil Local confucian Scool Lecture Hall(Myeongnyundang) were examined, and the value of architectural aesthetics, especially in wooden architectural cultural heritage, was examined. In addition, the value of using cultural heritage should contribute to revitalizing the local economy by utilizing it was also discussed, so we also looked at that part. In other words, the historical value of Imsil Local confucian Scool Lecture Hall(Myeongnyundang) was examined through records related to Imsil Local confucian Scool, academic values were compared and studied with designated cultural heritage with similar functions, and the value of age was examined, showing that a long time has passed. At the same time, it was suggested that Imsil Local confucian Scool Lecture Hall(Myeongnyundang) is worth using because it is selected and utilized in the 'Utilization of Our Region National Heritage' project. However, this study did not include Gosan Local confucian Scool Lecture Hall(Myeongryundang) and Namwon Local confucian Scool Lecture Hall(Myeongryundang), which have cultural heritage designation values. In the future, this part will be studied further, and the characteristics of Honam Confucian architecture will be found.

이-푸투안이 그의 저서 『공간과 장소』에서 ‘보존은 정체성을 보여주는 실재하는 대상물의 필요에서 발생하며, 오래된 건축물은 건축적 가치를 지닌 선조의 업적이기 때문에 후세를 위해 보존되어야 함’을 말한 것은 건축 유산이 지닌 역사적 장소를 보존해야 하는 이유이다. 우리나라의 문화유산관리는 2024년 5월 이전까지 ‘문화재보호법’아래에 유형과 무형, 자연유산까지 모두 포함해서 관리하는 포괄적 법제였다. 2024년에 문화재청이 국가유산청으로 개명하면서 《국가유산기본법》 아래 ‘문화유산의 보존 및 활용에 관한 법’(약칭 문화유산법), ‘무형유산의 보전 및 진흥에 관한 법’(무형유산법), ‘자연유산의 보존 및 활용에 관한 법’(자연유산법)을 제정하여 분법·관리하기 시작하였다. 그러나 여전히 지정된 문화유산에 한정하여 집중 관리하는 ‘중점보호주의 제도’ 아래 있다. 문화유산 지정의 가치는 역사적·예술적, 그리고 학술적 가치가 있어야 한다. 이러한 점에서 임실향교 명륜당의 역사적 가치와 학술적 가치를 살펴보고, 특히 목조건축 문화유산에 있어서 건축 미학의 경년의 가치도 살펴보았다. 또 문화유산은 그것을 활용하여 지역 경제 활성화에 기여 해야 한다는 사용의 가치도 거론되고 있어서 그 부분도 살펴보았다. 즉 임실향교 명륜당의 역사적 가치는 임실향교 관련 기록자료를 통해 살펴보았고, 학술적 가치는 비슷한 기능의 지정 문화유산과 비교·연구하였으며 오랜 시간이 흘렀음을 보여주는 경년의 가치를 살펴보았다. 동시에 임실향교는 ‘우리 고장 국가유산 활용’ 사업에 선정되어 활용되고 있으므로 그 사용 가치가 있음을 제시하였다. 다만 이번 연구에서는 문화유산 지정 가치가 있는 고산향교 명륜당, 남원향교 명륜당에 대해 포함하지 못하였다. 향후 이 부분은 더 연구하므로 호남 유교 건축의 특징을 찾아보기로 하겠다.
