In this paper I have analysed the research results on the Civil Service Examination(文科) of the Joseon Dynasty. Information on achievements for the Civil Service Examination was mainly collected from Korean history bibliography established by Hongik University(홍익대학교), and secondly Korean history research bulletin served by National Institute of Korean History(국사편찬위원회). From analyzing the collected informations, I found out that academic research for the Civil Examination began in the 1950s. And confirmed that research tendency was increased on the basis of translation and DB of the historical books such as Annals of the Joseon dynasty(조선왕조실록) and Journal of the Royal Secretariat(承政院日記) In spite of that, in my opinion, there are many errors in the former research. It mainly originated from understanding of the Civil Service Examination as a method selecting the talent only. But you should figure out the background of the Civil Service Examination was complicated. For example to share the pleasure of Royal Family(同慶) with ruling class(兩班) or to comfort their depressed mind or lift up their school fever were the important purposes of arranging the Civil Service Examination. I think future research for it should be conducted with that in mind.

본고에서 필자는 조선시대 문과에 관한 우리 학계의 그간 연구 성과를 정리하고 앞으로 어떤 방향에서 연구가 진행되었으면 하는지를 생각해 보았다. 연구 성과에 대한 정보는 홍익대학교에서 구축한 한국사 서지학 정보와 국사편찬위원회에서 제공해 주는 한국사 연구휘보에서 주로 수집하였는데, 수집 정보를 분석한 결과, 조선시대의 문과에 대한 학계의 연구가 시작된 것은 1950년대부터였음을 알 수 있었다. 문과 관련 연구는 『조선왕조실록』나 『승정원일기』와 같은 관찬서서의 DB화 및 번역을 기점으로 크게 증가하였다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 필자는 문과에 대한 기존 연구에 적지 않은 오류가 있다는 점을 지적하였다. 그것은 문과를 단순히 인재 선발의 측면으로만 이해한 데서 비롯된 일이었다. 문과 설행의 배경에는 인재 선발 외에도 同慶이나 慰撫 또는 勸學 등 다양한 목적이 있었으며, 그것이 인재 선발보다 더 중요하게 간주되었는데, 그러한 점에 대해서는 지금껏 큰 관심을 기울이지 않았던 것이다. 그런 점에서 앞으로의 문과 연구는 이를 염두에 두고 진행되어야 하지 않을까 한다.
