This paper examines the impact of using ChatGPT on improving second language (L2) writing skills through self-assessment within a structured revision process. A total of 114 university students enrolled in an academic writing course participated in the study and evaluated their performance in multiple writing tasks. Using a quantitative research methodology, writing samples collected before and after the incorporation of ChatGPT-assisted feedback in four essay tasks were analyzed. The findings indicate that integrating ChatGPT into the writing process facilitates significant improvements in grammar, vocabulary, content, and coherence, demonstrating its effectiveness as a complementary tool in L2 instruction. The comprehensive revisions with ChatGPT helped students fully understand the feedback and encouraged them to apply the insights independently during the review phase, fostering deeper engagement with their writing. These results suggest that ChatGPT not only improves writing quality but also promotes self-assessment and learner autonomy, thereby contributing to a more holistic approach that complements time-constrained, teacher-led instruction in L2 classes.

본고는 ChatGPT를 활용한 자기평가가 구조화된 검토 과정의 일환으로서 L2 글쓰기에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 고찰했다. 연구에는 “College English 1: Academic Writing” 교과를 수강한 D. 대학의 학생 114명이 참여했으며, 참여자 가 네 차례에 걸쳐 작성한 에세이 과제를 평가, 분석했다. 양적 연구 방법을 바탕 으로, ChatGPT를 통한 자기평가를 도입하기 전과 후에 작성된 에세이를 비교, 분 석한 결과, ChatGPT의 활용이 글의 문법, 어휘, 내용, 일관성 면에 두드러진 영향 을 주는 것으로 나타났고, 전반적인 학문적 글쓰기 역량뿐만 아니라 자기평가 능력과 자기주도적 학습을 촉진시키는 효과가 확인되었다. 평가와 함께 제시된 ChatGPT 의 피드백을 참고하여 에세이를 검토하는 과정은 학생들에게 수정이 필요한 부분 들을 정확히 이해한 후 각각의 제안 사항을 반영하여 스스로 에세이를 개선하도록 하는 고무적인 환경을 제공했다. 이러한 결과는 언어 학습과 인공지능(AI) 기술의 결합이 L2 학습자의 언어적, 구조적, 논리적 어려움을 적시에 해결함과 동시에 시 간적 한계로 인한 교수자 피드백을 보완하는 개인적이고 효율적인 교육 도구가 될 수 있음을 시사한다.
