The emergence of oral history exhibitions is quite a recent phenomenon in the history of museums in the West which have focused on the display of objects. Oral history exhibition has not been the major concern of oral historians in the West in terms of using oral history either. But oral history has shown up in museum exhibits from libraries and archives since the 1970’s, and oral history exhibitions are thriving in the U.K and the U.S.A since the 2000’s. Meanwhile, oral history exhibitions have recently emerged from the encounter of oral history and museum in South Korea around 2015. The rise of contemporary history museums in the 2000’s has been effected by the boom of history museum brought about the oral history exhibits in some major history museums in 2020. But they are still in the beginning phase of experimenting oral history in the museum display. This article seeks to promote oral history exhibition in contemporary history museums by examining oral history exhibits in the western museums especially of the U.K and the U.S.A. In order to achieve such objective, the encounter between oral history and museum since the 1970’s will be overviewed. Oral history exhibitions in the U.K and the U.S.A. started to be successful and become a research subject of oral history in the late 1980’s and flourished through the 1990’s. They have become the main exhibits for local community and minority in the 2000’s. Their major features are audio-oriented, focusing diverse voices of local community and minorities, implementing special exhibits and digital exhibits. In addition, displaying issues involved in oral history exhibitions, such as displayed memory, how to integrate oral history in exhibits, how to display orality, institutional power, historical interpretation through oral history and the role of oral historian in relation to oral history exhibitions are examined. The implications of this examination are discussed to enhance the growth of oral history exhibitions in contemporary history museums in South Korea.

서구 박물관 역사에서 전통적인 유물 중심의 전시에서 청각 자료를 사용하는 구술사 전시의 등장은 최근 현상이라고 볼 수 있다. 또한 서구 구술사 연구에서 구술자료 의 활용이라는 측면에서 보더라도 구술사 전시는 구술사가들의 주 관심사가 아니었 다. 그러나 1970년대부터 구술사가 전시에 활용되기 시작하여 2000년대에 이르러서 는 영국과 미국을 중심으로 구술사 전시가 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 한국에서도 구 술사와 박물관의 만남은 아주 최근으로 2015년경부터 구술사 전시 사례가 나오기 시 작했다. 2000년대 역사박물관 붐으로 증가한 근현대역사박물관에서 2020년을 전후 로 구술사 전시들이 상설 전시의 일부로 나타났다. 그러나 이들 구술사 전시는 특정한 형태로 아직도 초보적이고 실험적인 상황이다. 이 글에서는 서구의 영미 박물관을 중 심으로 구술사 전시의 동향을 파악하여 그 사사점들을 통해서 국내 근현대역사박물관 의 구술사 전시를 활성화하고자 한다. 이를 위해서 먼저 서구에서 1970년대 말부터 시작된 박물관과 구술사의 만남을 정리한다. 구술사 전시는 1980년대 말부터 미국과 영국에서 구술사 전시가 성공하면서 1990년대를 통하여 증가하였으며 2000년대에 는 다양한 이주민들과 지역사회와 관련된 구술사 전시가 주를 이루고 있다. 그리고 서구 구술사 전시 사례들이 가지고 있는 특징인 청각 중심의 전시, 지역사회와 주변인 들 중심, 기획전 중심 그리고 온라인 전시 활용을 검토한다. 또한 서구 구술사 전시가 가지고 있는 쟁점들, 전시된 기억, 전시에 구술사 통합과 구술성 전시 방법, 전시 기 관, 역사해석과 구술사가의 역할도 논의한다. 마지막으로 이러한 서구 구술사 전시 동 향 분석이 국내 근현대역사박물관 구술 전시에 어떤 시사점을 제시하는지 도출한다.
