This paper critically examines existing research on the modernization of visual arts, which argues that painting, sculpture, and architecture transitioned from the Mechanical Arts to the Liberal Arts and were later redefined as Fine Arts in the 18th century. As the social status of visual arts rose in the 15th and 16th centuries, artists sought to distinguish their practice from the mechanical arts and align it with liberal arts. However, this transition was never fully realized. This study contends that visual arts developed in a manner similar to modern science—not merely as a practical field distinct from the mechanical arts, nor as a purely speculative discipline akin to the liberal arts, but as a third domain that integrating both practice and intellect. From this perspective, the modernization of visual arts should not be understood as a process in which artists emphasized only intellectual aspects while excluding physical and practical activities to assimiliate into the liberal arts. Rather, it was a continuous effort to recognize and develop both intellectual and practical dimensions as instrinsic of visual arts.

본 연구는 시각 예술의 근대화 과정에서 회화, 조각, 건축이 메카니컬 아츠에서 벗어나 리버럴 아츠에 포함되었다가, 18세기에 이르러 파인 아츠라는 새로운 개념으로 정립되었다는 기존 연구를 비판적으로 검토하고 이를 보완하는 데 목적을 둔다. 15~16세기에 시각 예술의 사회적 지위가 상승함 에 따라, 예술가들은 시각 예술을 메카니컬 아츠와 구별하며 더 상위의 학문 할동인 리버럴 아츠로 편입시키고자 주장하였다. 본 연구는 시각 예술의 근대화 과정이 리버럴 아츠로의 편입을 거친 것이 아니라, 오히려 근대 과학의 형성과 유사한 방식으로 발전하였다고 주장한다. 이는 시각 예술이 단순히 실천적 영역인 메카니컬 아츠와 구분될 뿐만 아니라, 사색적 학문인 리버럴 아츠와도 차별화되며, 실천과 정신을 아우르는 제3의 영역으로 발전했음을 의미한다. 따라서 본 논문은 시각 예술의 근대화 과정을, 예술가들이 자신의 활동을 리버럴 아츠로 편입시키기 위해 정신성을 강조하며 실천적이고 신체적인 활동을 배제한 과정으로 보기보다는, 오히려 정신과 실천의 양 측면을 시각 예술의 본질적 요소로 인정하고 이를 발전시켜 온 과정으로 해석할 수 있음을 밝히고자 한다.
