Regional characters are more than simple symbols or tools for revitalizing the local economy through tourism promotion. They are means of communication that connect the region and the community. However, researches on the relationship between regional characters and the community are insufficient. This study aims to investigate the functions and meanings of regional characters from a community perspective, focusing on 'GoyangGoyangi', the regional character of Goyang City, through literature research and in-depth interviews. The results of the study are as follows: First, in order to discover and utilize new regional resources, it is essential to have a concept that reflects the locality in the development process of regional characters, which serves as a basis for enhancing the pride of the local community. Second, in order to strengthen community cohesion through regional characters, it is essential to form a sense of community bond through changes in the times and interaction with residents in daily life. Third, regional characters that reflect locality and originality not only promote communication and bonding among residents within the region, but also serve as an important medium for building cooperative relationships with the outside. Fourth, regional characters promote participation in regional projects based on emotional bonds with local residents, and play a role as a medium for cooperation for local social problems. This study has academic and practical significance in that it verified that regional characters can contribute to the revitalization of the local community by being connected to the lives of local residents.

지역 캐릭터는 지역의 단순한 상징물이나 관광 홍보 기여에 따른 지역경제 활성화 차원을 넘어 지역과 공동체를 이어주는 소통 수단이다. 그러나 지역 캐 릭터와 공동체의 관계에 대한 연구는 부족한 상황이다. 본 연구에서는 공동체 관점에서 지역 캐릭터의 기능과 의미를 규명하고자, 고양특례시의 지역 캐릭터 인 '고양고양이' 사례를 중심으로 문헌조사와 심층 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 새로운 지역 자원을 발굴・활용하기 위해서는 지역 캐릭터 개발 과정에서 지역성이 반영된 콘셉트가 필수적이며, 이는 지역공동체의 자긍심을 고취하는 기반이 된다. 둘째, 지역 캐릭터를 통해 공동체 결속력을 강화하기 위해서는 시대에 따른 변화와 주민들과의 일상적인 상호작용을 통한 공동체 유대감 형성이 필수적이다. 셋째, 지역성과 독창성이 반영된 지역 캐릭터는 지 역 주민들 간 소통과 유대감 형성을 촉진하는 동시에, 외부와의 협력관계를 구 축하는 데 중요한 매개체가 된다. 넷째, 지역 캐릭터는 지역민과의 정서적 유 대감을 바탕으로 지역 사업 참여를 촉진하고, 지역 사회 문제를 위한 협력의 매개체 역할을 한다. 본 연구는 지역 캐릭터가 지역민의 삶과 연결됨으로써 지 역공동체 활성화에 기여하는 역할을 하는 방안을 제시했다는 점에서 학술적· 실무적 의미가 있다.
