This study examines the primary characteristics of sages as depicted in the Han Feizi and explores the contradictory perspectives expressed toward them, along with the underlying causes of these contradictions. The Han Feizi clearly distinguishes sages from ordinary individuals and reflects on the foundational basis of their existence. According to the text, sages are those who have mastered Dao and Li, thereby possessing transcendent abilities to govern the world. Furthermore, sages are depicted as central figures who lead the establishment and enforcement of laws, playing a key role in securing political stability. However, alongside this positive portrayal, the Han Feizi also presents critical perspectives on sages, noting that they often struggle to adapt to changing times and face limitations due to a lack of effective leadership and talent management. This contradictory stance in the Han Feizi stems from a range of complex factors, including the changing times, interactions with other philosophical schools, and later interpolations during the editing process. Such discussions in the Han Feizi offer valuable insights for reconsidering the role of sages and the developmental trajectory of Chinese philosophy.
