This study focused on the production technique, process, and significance of Narcissus, known as the final work of Norman McLaren. The Narcissus myth is a story of tragedy brought by excessive narcissism and obsession and has been reinterpreted in many works of art. In this work, McLaren expressed a mythical story through the organic fusion of dance and film; and intensively showed the skills he experienced and acquired throughout his life. This paper will examine the surreal expression method of dance using visual techniques, focusing on McLaren’s Narcissus. The work shows the beautiful young man and his reflection in the water at the same time and forms a relationship between the real self and the fantasy self. The researcher interprets this as a surreal expression and defines it as a confrontation between reality and illusion. The purpose of the study is to understand the production technique and form of Narcissus from the perspective of a dance film; and to clarify the role and meaning of the technique. While analyzing the work, the main techniques and systematic forms were discovered and their significance in production was considered. The main body was set as ‘a technique for forming a relationship between reality and illusion’, and the seven techniques used by McLaren (mirror shot, cross-cutting, flicker, jump cut, symmetry, blur, and splitting) were examined. The sections were developed in the following order: 1) definition of technique, 2) significance in the work, and 3) concrete technique implementation method and form. Techniques have strong visual characteristics that give new meaning by transforming and manipulating the image of dance. These are original challenges focusing on experimentation and innovation, and they contributed to the formation of the relationship between reality and illusion, becoming an important tool for the content aspect and composition of the work. It is expected that this study will contribute to our detailed understanding of how dance and film are combined based on the production method of Narcissus and provide inspiration to other creators.

본 연구는 노먼 맥라렌(Norman McLaren)의 마지막 작품으로 알려진 <나르시서스>의 제작기법과 과정, 의의에 주목하였다. 나르시서스 신화는 지나친 자기애와 집착이 가져다주는 비극의 이야기로 많은 예술 작품에서 재해석되었다. 맥라렌은 이 작 품에서 무용과 영상의 유기적인 융합을 통해 신화적 스토리를 표현하였으며, 그가 평생 동안 실험하고 습득한 기술의 총체를 선보였다. 본 논문에서는 맥라렌의 <나르시서스>를 중심으로 영상 기법을 활용한 무용의 초현실적 표현 방식을 고찰하고자 한다. 작품은 미모의 청년과 물속 그림자를 동시에 보여주며 실제 자아와 환상의 자아와의 관계를 형성한다. 연구자는 이를 초현실적 표현으로 해석하고 실상과 허상의 대립으로 정의하였다. 연구의 목적은 무용영상의 관점에서 <나르시서스>의 제작 기법과 형식을 파악하며, 기법의 역할과 의미를 규명하는 것이다. 연구자는 작품을 분석하면서 주요 기법과 체계적인 형식을 발견하고 제작에서의 의의를 고찰하였다. 본론은 ‘실상과 허상의 관계 형성을 위한 기법’으로 설정하고 맥라렌이 사용한 7가 지 기법(거울 촬영, 교차편집, 플리커, 점프컷, 대칭, 블러, 분열)을 살펴보았다. 각 절은 1)기법의 정의, 2)작품에서의 의의, 3)구체적 기법 구현 방식과 형식의 순으로 전개된다. 기법들은 무용의 이미지를 변형하고 조작하여 새로운 의미를 부여하는 시각적인 특성이 강하다. 이것들은 실험과 혁신에 초점을 맞춘 독창적인 도전으로 실상과 허상의 관계 형성에 기여하면서 작 품의 내용적 측면과 구성의 중요한 장치가 되었다. 본 연구가 <나르시서스>의 제작 방식을 바탕으로 무용과 영상이 어떻게 융합되었는지를 구체적으로 파악하고, 창작자들에게 영감을 제공하길 기대한다.
