This study aims to analyze Stephen’s speech in Acts 6-7 from a rhetorical criticism perspective. To this end, various rhetorical criticism techniques applicable to biblical studies were utilized, based on the rhetorical criticism method of G. A. Kennedy. Kennedy organized a range of rhetorical techniques for biblical analysis, including the three modes of rhetorical proof—ethos, pathos, and logos— along with methods for setting up argumentation, rhetorical arrangement, and uncovering rhetorical effects. In studying Stephen’s speech, the research focused on establishing rhetorical units, identifying the rhetorical context, deriving rhetorical issues, and analyzing the setup and arrangement of arguments. Through this, the study examined both the technical aspects of rhetoric and the rhetorical arrangement for persuasion, as well as the rhetorical effects. Additionally, the study applied Kennedy’s rhetorical criticism methodology to assess the rhetorical units, context, issues, argument setup, arrangement, and rhetorical effects.

본 연구의 목적은 사도행전 6-7장에 등장하는 스데반의 연설을 수사비평 적인 관점에서 분석하는데 있다. 이를 위해 케네디(G. A. Kennedy)의 수사 비평 방법을 기반으로 성서 연구에 적용할 수 있는 다양한 수사 비평 기법 을 활용하였다. 케네디는 성서 연구를 위해 에토스, 파토스, 로고스의 세 가 지 수사 기술적 입증과 논증 설정, 수사 배열 및 수사효과 발견과 같은 다양 한 수사 기법을 정리하였다. 스데반의 연설을 연구하기 위해 수사 단위의 설 정, 수사 상황 파악, 수사 문제 도출, 그리고 논증의 설정 및 배열을 분석하 였다. 이를 통해 수사의 기술적인 측면과 설득을 위한 수사 배열(Rhetorical arrangement)과 수사 효과(Rhetorical effect)를 연구하였다. 본 연구를 위해 스데반의 연설을 케네디의 수사비평 방법론을 적용해 수사 단위 설정, 수사 상황, 수사 문제 발견, 논증 설정, 배열, 그리고 수사 효과를 평가하였다.1) 스데반의 죽음으로 인해 표면적인 수사 효과는 실패한 것으로 보이기 때문 이다. 하지만 다양한 성서의 증거를 볼 때 그의 죽음으로 인해 복음 확장의 전환점이 되었으며(고전 15:9, 갈 1:13, 23, 빌 3:6, 딤전 1:13), 스데반의 죽 음의 자리에 있던 사울이 이후에 복음의 확장을 담당하는 것을 볼 때 실제 적인 수사 효과는 긍정적이다.
