The meeting between Jesus and the Samaritan woman recorded in John 4 can be newly illuminated from the perspective of honor and shame, which was an important value of Mediterranean society at the time. In first-century Jewish society, honor was an important factor in determining the identity of individuals and communities, and shame meant a state of loss. As a Jewish man, Jesus talks to Samaritan women, transcending the social norms of the time, and presents the possibility of a new relationship. This study analyzes the conversation between Jesus and Samaritan women using social science criticism, and through this, examines the effect of honor and shame on the social position and interaction of the characters at that time. It also discusses that Jesus’ actions played a role in breaking religious and social boundaries, reflecting the inclusive and transcendent perspective aimed at the John community. As a result of the study, this event reconstructs the traditional norms of honor and shame and shows the possibility of forming a new community that achieves integration between various ethnicities and classes. Furthermore, this study highlights how the social and cultural norms of the time interacted with the message of the Gospel, exploring how the development and theological vision of the Johannine community are connected to this event. Through this, it provides a foundation for reevaluating the inclusive values of the church and faith communities that remain applicable today.

요한복음 4장에 기록된 예수와 사마리아 여인의 만남은 당시 지중해 사 회의 중요한 가치였던 명예와 수치의 관점에서 새롭게 조명될 수 있다. 1세기 유대 사회에서 명예는 개인과 공동체의 정체성을 결정짓는 중요한 요소 였으며, 수치는 이를 상실한 상태를 의미했다. 예수는 유대인 남성으로서 사마리아 여성과 대화하며 당시의 사회적 규범을 넘어서고, 새로운 관계의 가 능성을 제시한다. 본 연구는 사회과학적 비평을 활용하여 예수와 사마리아 여인의 대화를 분석하며, 이를 통해 명예와 수치가 당시 인물들의 사회적 위치와 상호 작용에 미친 영향을 고찰한다. 또한, 예수의 행위가 요한 공동체가 지향한 포용성과 초월적 관점을 반영하며, 종교적·사회적 경계를 허무는 역할을 했음을 논의한다. 연구 결과, 이 사건은 명예와 수치라는 전통적 규범을 재구성하고, 다양한 민족과 계층 간 통합을 이루는 새로운 공동체 형성의 가능성을 보여준다. 더 나아가, 본 논문은 이러한 분석을 통해 당시 사회적, 문화적 규범이 복음의 메시지와 상호작용하는 방식을 조명하며, 요한공동체의 발전과 신학적 비전이 이 사건과 어떻게 연결되어 있는지를 탐구한다. 이를 통해 오늘날에도 적용 가능한 교회와 신앙 공동체의 포용적 가치를 재고찰 할 수 있는 기반을 마련한다.
