The concepts of iconography and attributes, studied for the analysis of art history and artworks, provide a meaningful framework for interpreting contemporary fashion imagery. Iconography follows three stages: identifying the subject, exploring the theme, and analyzing symbolism. Attributes, including natural and artificial objects related to a central figure, symbolize status or abilities and help in understanding mythological or religious characters. In modern art and pop culture, attributes serve both character depiction and aesthetic functions, categorized into six types: empowerment, religious, weaponry, character-defining, pet-like, and aesthetic. Fashion imagery reflects the industry’s unique traits, expressing brand identity, sexual appeal, and cultural appropriation through six types: brand symbolism, lifestyle expression, gender representation, fetishism, fashion icon replication, and style depiction. Fashion attributes appear through imitation and appropriation, contrast and editing, and contemporary projection. Unlike traditional iconography, fashion imagery reflects modernity and object-based artistic expression. Postmodern trends increasingly incorporate classical art, reinforcing iconographic analysis as a key interpretative tool.

미술사의 연구와 미술작품의 해석을 위해 연구된 도상해석학과 지물의 개념은 현대 패션 이미지를 이해하는 의미 있는 방법적 틀로서 가능성이 모색될 수 있다. 도상해석학은 이미지를 해석하는 단계적 방법으로서, 대상의 파악, 주제의 탐구, 내포된 상징성의 연구라는 세 가지 단계를 거친다. 이 과정에서 지물이란 중심 표 현 대상과의 관계성을 바탕으로 해석될 수 있다. 이는 신분이나 능력을 상징하는 자연물과 인공물을 포함하는 것으로서 신화나 종교적 이미지 속의 캐릭터를 이해 할 수 있게 하는 기능적 목적이 있다. 현대 대중문화와 미술에 나타나는 지물은 현대적 특성의 캐릭터를 묘사하기 위한 중심 목적과 함께 조형적 표현 목적이 반영 되었고, 권능형, 종교형, 무구형, 캐릭터 설명형, 펫 유형, 조형적 표현형의 6가지 지물 유형으로 나타난다. 현대 패션 이미지에서 지물의 표현은 패션 분야의 독자 적 특성이 반영됨으로써, 브랜드 아이덴티티의 표현, 성적어필, 문화와 예술의 차용을 위한 수단으로써 6가지 구체적인 표현유형으로 나타난다. 이는 브랜드 상징, 라이프스타일 표현, 젠더의 표상, 패티시적 표현, 패션 아이콘의 복제, 패션스타일의 표현을 위한 지물 유형으로 분류될 수 있다. 패션 이미지에서 지물이 표현되는 세 가지 방법으로는 모방과 차용, 대비와 편집, 동시대성의 투영으로 나타남을 고찰하였다. 결과적으로 전통 도상해석학의 대상인 미술작품과 비교할 때, 패션 이 미지에서의 지물표현은 현대의 시대성을 반영하며 현대미술의 오브제적 특성을 반영한다. 최근에는 과거의 고전미술의 이미지를 차용하는 포스트모더니즘적 경향 성이 패션 이미지의 창작 과정에 빈번히 나타남으로써 도상 해석학적 방법론이 중요한 해석의 틀로서 부각 되었다는 점을 확인할 수 있다.
