This study seeks to explore and examine ethnic and social identity through the narrative of a Korean mother who is a newcomer in Japan. The migration of Koreans to Japan reflects both the general patterns of migration accelerated by globalization and specific historical factors rooted in the colonial era. The researcher defines a Korean newcomer as an individual living in the global era while still partly influenced by the legacy of the colonial period. Within the particular context of Japan, the research participant, a Korean mother new to the country, continually shapes and reshapes her identity through interactions with diverse and sometimes conflicting narratives. When encountering scenarios that stress collective identities tied to ethnicity or nationality, she resolves tensions by integrating identities influenced by her social relationships and roles Moreover, she recognizes the differing positions between nations and ethnic groups, the distinct experiences of first- and second-generation immigrants, and the varying values, behaviors, and identities of Koreans in Korea versus those living abroad. Through the formation and practice of identities based on ethnic and social roles, the newcomer Korean mother is creating a new home for herself and her children. This study suggests that immigration research should focus on how immigrants build and practice their identities through active interaction with the host society.

본 연구는 재일 뉴커머 한국인 어머니의 내러티브를 통해 민족아이덴티티과 사회적 아이덴티티1)를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 일본으로의 이주는 전지 구화 현상으로 인해 가속화되고 있는 타지역으로의 이주와 중첩되는 보편성과 식 민지시대의 역사에 기인한 특수성을 동시에 가지고 있다. 이러한 점에서 연구자는 재일 뉴커머 한국인을 글로벌 시대를 살아가는 동시에 식민지시대의 유산을 부분 적으로 짊어지고 있는 존재로 정의한다. 일본이라는 특수한 시공간적 배경 속에서 연구 협력자인 재일 뉴커머 한국인 어머니는 그녀를 둘러싼 다양하고 때로는 서로 상충되는 담론과의 상호작용을 통해 아이덴티티를 형성하고 재구축하고 있다. 　 그 과정을 살펴보면, 그녀는 민족이나 국민이라는 집단적 아이덴티티를 강조하는 상황에 부딪혔을 때 사회적 관계나 역할로부터 형성되는 아이덴티티를 실천함으 로 갈등상황을 해결해 나가고 있었다. 또한 국가나 민족 간에는 서로 다른 입장이 존재한다는 점, 같은 한국인이라도 이민 1세과 이민 2세는 서로 다른 상황에 놓여 있다는 점, 한국에 살고 있는 한국인과 외국을 삶의 무대로 하고 있는 한국인은 서 로 다른 가치관과 행동양식, 그리고 아이덴티티를 가진다는 점을 인식하고 있었 다. 재일 뉴커머 한국인 어머니는 민족 아이덴티티와 사회적 역할에서 오는 아이 덴티티의 형성과 실천을 통해 자신과 아이들을 위한 새로운 고향을 구축하고 있었 다. 본 연구를 통해 연구자는 이민관련 연구에 있어 이민이 현지사회와의 주체적 상호작용을 통해 아이덴티티를 구축하고 실천해 가는 모습에 초점을 맞추는 관점 이 필요하다고 주장하고 있다.
