The use of physical force is an inevitable part of law enforcement, but its legitimacy and appropriateness has been debated. In recent years, there has been increasing public interest and concern about the use of passive police force, which has increased the need for a systematic analysis of the factors that influence the use of physical force. Police officers are affected by a variety of environmental factors in the course of their work, and among these, internal organisational support and external media and community support have been identified as important factors influencing police officers' performance and decision-making. Against this background, this study was designed to examine the structural relationship between police officers' perceived organisational and external social support and their use of physical force. In addition, this study sought to determine the mediating effect of self-legitimacy on this relationship. The results showed that the higher the support from supervisors and the support from citizens, the more willing officers were to use physical force in dangerous situations. Path analyses confirmed that higher organisational support, higher negative media exposure and higher citizen support mediated self-legitimacy leading to more aggressive use of force. Based on these findings, we discuss the impact of social support on police psychology and decision-making, and provide policy implications to prevent passive use of force in dangerous situations.

이 연구의 목적은 경찰이 인식하는 조직 및 외부의 사회적 지지가 경찰 물리력 행사에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것이다. 경찰물리력 행사는 법집행 과정에서 불가피한 요소이지만, 그 정당성과 적절성에 대한 논의는 지속되어 왔다. 특히 최근 소극적인 경찰물리력 행사에 대한 시민들의 관심과 우려가 증가하면서, 물리력 행사에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 체계적으로 분석할 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 이 연구에서는 경찰관 이 업무 수행 과정에서 받는 환경적 요인 중 조직 내부의 지지(조직의 지지, 상사의 지지)와 조직 외부의 지지(미디어 노출 및 시민의 지지)가 경찰관의 물리력 행사에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 또한, 이 관계에서 자기정당성이 매개효과를 갖는지 확인하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 전국의 경찰관을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하고, 수집된 데이터를 바탕으로 경로분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 상사의 지지와 시민의 지지가 높을수록 경찰관은 위험 상황에서 보다 적극적으로 물리력을 행사하는 경향이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 조직의 지지가 높을수록, 부정적 미디어 노출이 많을수록, 시민의 지지가 높을수록 자기정당성을 매개하여 적극적인 물리력을 행사하는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로, 사회적 지지가 경찰관 의 심리 및 물리력 행사 의사결정에 미치는 영향을 논의하고, 위험 상황에서 소극적인 물리력 행사를 방지할 수 있는 정책적 제안을 제시하였다.
