This study aimed to examine the determinants of individuals` perceptions of disorder. Specifically, the current study focused on personal characteristics, trust in the police effectiveness, and informal social control to explain why individuals` evaluations of disorder differ even when residing in the same neighborhoods. For the empirical analysis of this study, this study utilized the data from ‘a study on the safety condition and policy issues in foreign population concentrated areas’ conducted by the Korean Institute of Criminology and Justice in 2019. The results of the regression analysis indicated that, with regard to personal characteristics, foreigners perceived less disorder compared to native residents. Women, individuals with victimization experiences, and those of older age were found to perceive greater levels of disorder compared to their counterparts. Additionally, individuals with higher trust in the police effectiveness were found to perceive less disorder, whereas informal social control was not found to have a significant impact on perceptions of disorder. Lastly, the implications of the current study and suggestions for future research were discussed.

본 연구의 목적은 동일한 지역에 거주하는 개인들이 무질서에 대해 상이한 인식을 가지는 이유를 탐색하 는 것으로, 개인의 무질서 인식에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대하여 살펴보고자 하였다. 구체적으로, 동일한 지역에 거주하더라도 사람마다 왜 무질서에 대한 평가가 다른지에 대하여 개인적 특성, 경찰효과성에 대한 신뢰, 지역의 비공식적 사회통제를 중심으로 설명하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 실증적 분석을 위해 2019 년 한국형사ㆍ법무정책연구원에서 실시한 ‘외국인 밀집지역의 환경조사’ 자료를 분석에 활용하였다. 회귀분석 결과, 개인적 특성과 관련하여 내국인에 비해 외국인이 무질서를 더욱 적게 인식하는 경향이 확인되었다. 반면에 여성, 범죄피해경험자, 연령이 높은 사람일수록 무질서를 더 많이 인지하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 경찰효과성에 대해 신뢰는 무질서 인식의 감소와 유의미한 관련성을 보였으나, 비공식적 사회통제는 무질서에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 이러한 연구결과가 갖는 함의와 후속연구에 대한 제언 등에 대해 논하였다.
