This study aims to examine The Thought of the Book of Changes implicit in Choi-eui(草衣)’s poems. The Book of Changes(I-ching, 周易) and the origins of tea traces back to China’s Three Emperor’s Era, and the rule of The Book of Changes that the sky and the ground’s rule applies to human life is deeply in relation with tea culture as well. This study examines ‘Equilibrium and Righteousness(中正)’ and ‘Self-cultivation(수 신)’ through the poems of Choi-eui, the most representative figure in Korean tea. There is the idea of ‘Equilibrium and Righteousness’ that represents Korean tea in the 59-60 stanzas of Choi-eui’s Dongdasong. The namesake of ‘Equilibrium and Righteousness’ can be traced from The Book of Changes. ‘Equilibrium and Righteousness’ in The Book of Changes is in accord with the relation of the Sentence of Hexagram and Lines’ capabilities and position but it also shows moral practices and value standards contextually speaking. As shown in Cheih(Limitation, 水 澤節), if the actions of oneself gains the virtue of Righteousness, it will not be excessive or lacking. Cho-eui also said that since there is no malice in tea, the features of tea is like the features of a Gunja(君子) through his poems. We can Self-cultivate and reach the truth(道) by drinking tea. The meaning of Self-cultivation in Ch’ien(The Creative, 重 天乾) that we should prevent malicious thoughts through continuous self-cultivation and should strive to preserve our truthfulness is shown in Cho-eui’s poems.

본 논문은 초의선사의 시에 내재 된 주역 사상을 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있다. 주역과 차의 기원은 중국의 삼황(三皇) 시대까지 소급되고, 인간의 삶에 천지의 이치 가 적용된다는 周易원리는 茶문화와 깊은 관계를 맺고 있다. 이와 같은 사실에 기인하 여 본 논문에서는 한국의 다인중에서 가장 대표적인 초의선사의 시를 통해 주역의 중 정과 수신 사상을 살펴보았다. 초의의 동다송에 59~60구에는 한국의 차정신을 대표하는 중정(中正) 사상이 들어있다. 중정은 그 어원을 주역에서부터 찾을 수 있다. 주역에서의 중정은 괘사와 효 사의 자질, 위치의 상관관계와 적합성이지만 내용적인 면을 보면, 도덕적인 실천과 가 치 기준을 나타내기도 한다. 수택절(水澤節)괘를 보면 자신의 처신이 중정의 도를 얻 으면 과하거나 불급하지 않고 절제하며 잘 통할 수 있다. 초의는 또한 그의 시를 통해 차에 삿됨이 없으므로 그 성질이 군자와 같다고 했다. 그러므로 차를 마심으로써 수신 할 수 있고 도에 이를 수 있다는 것이다. 반복적이고 끊임없는 수신을 통해 사특한 마 음을 막고, 자신의 진실함을 보존하려는 괘인 중천건(重天乾)괘 ｢문언전(文言傳)｣과 함께 효사에서 말하는 수신에 초점을 맞춰 초의 시를 고찰하였다.
