The existence of samurai over a long period of time in Japanese history is difficult to ignore. This is because of the fact that the samurais not only existed as a military group who used force, but also converted their social class with time and became the ruling class. This is a unique characteristic that is difficult to find in the history of other countries. From that perspective, the present study conducted research keeping the samurai at the center in examining Japanese spirituality, especially the aspects of rituals in Japanese literature. To this end, various aspects of early Japanese Bushi were examined, an area which still awaits further research. From this perspective, the literary genre selected in the present study is Gunki Monogatari, which describes various aspects of a Bushi. Although there are historical records and personal diaries that involve samurai, most of them come after Japan's Bushi class had grown to a certain extent. Therefore, the adoption of Gunki Monogatari can be seen as a natural conclusion in examining Japanese Bushi as a social class that was newly emerging at that time and what their perception was. Therefore, among various Gunki Monogatari stories, a few representative ones have been selected for this study and their contents were compared and analyzed to check what kind of changes in the social class the early Japanese Bushi underwent and how were they recognized.

일본사에 있어서 무사라는 존재는 긴 시간에 걸쳐서 빼놓기 어려운 존재일 것이다. 더해서 단순히 무력을 구사하는 군사 집단으로서만 존재한 것이 아니라 시대의 흐름에 따라서 사회 계급을 역전시켜서 지배 계급으로서 군림한 점은 다른 나라의 역사에서 찾아보기 어려운 독특한 특성이라고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그러한 관점에서 본고에서는 일본의 정신성, 특히나 일본 문학 속의 제양상을 고찰함에 있어서 무사를 중심에 두고 연구를 진행하였고, 그를 위해서 아직 여러 연구 진행의 필요성이 존재하는 초기 일본 무사들의 양상을 살펴보기로 하였다. 이러한 관점에서 본 연구에서 선택한 문학 장르는 무사의 여러 양상들을 기술하고 있는 군키 모노가타리이다. 비록 무사들을 다룬 기록으로서 역사 기록이나 개인 일기 등이 있으나, 어디까지나 그것은 일본의 무사 계급이 어느 정도 성장한 이후의 기록이 많다. 그렇기에 당시 새로이 부각되기 시작한 사회 계층으로서의 일본 무사를 고찰하고, 그 인식이 어떠하였는지를 살펴봄에 있어서 군키 모노가타리를 채택한 것은 자연스러운 귀결이라고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 여러 군키 모노가타리 중에서 대표성을 가지는 군키 모노가타리를 몇 편 선정하여 그 내용을 서로 비교하고, 분석하는 것을 통하여 초기 일본 무사가 어떠한 사회 계층적 변동을 가졌는지, 또 어떠한 방식으로 인식이 되었는지를 확인해보고자 하였다.
