The current research aimed to examine the multilingual sign patterns of railway companies in the Kansai region and identify the ideal form of the multilingual sign. The research methodology involved random selection of stations based on passenger statistics provided by each company, and comparing and analyzing the language sign of the railway facilities. The findings showed that most facilities use bilingual sign in Japanese and English, while some display trilingual sign including Korean, and some even display quadrilingual sign adding Chinese and Korean. There were also cases of sign in only Japanese, pictograms, or no sign at all, leading to six types of signs. Overall, the facilities with four or two languages were more common, and most followed the guidelines provided by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). However, signage in languages other than English was often used as needed, showing variations across the railway companies. Furthermore, guidelines suggest that multilingual sign should be used only when it does not affect legibility or aesthetics. Overloading sign with multiple languages may make it harder to read at a glance. Therefore, it is recommended to standardize the frequently encountered signs into one type, and for proper nouns like station names, it is preferable to use languages other than English.

본고에서는 간사이(関西) 지역 철도회사의 다언어표기 양상을 조사하여 바람직한 다 언어표기의 모습에 대해 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 조사 방법으로는 각 회사가 공 개한 승하차 인원과 관련된 통계 자료를 참고하여 역을 임의로 선정한 후 철도 내 시설 물의 언어 표기를 비교 분석하였다. 조사 결과, 대부분의 시설물에서 일본어와 영어의 2언어 표기가 사용되고 있으며, 한국어를 병기한 3언어, 중국어와 한국어를 병기한 4언어 표기도 볼 수 있었다. 또한 일본어 단독 표기와 픽토그램, 시설은 있으나 아무런 표기가 없는 경우까지 총 6가지의 표기 유형으로 분류할 수 있었다. 전체적으로는 4언어와 2언어가 표기된 시설물이 많았으며, 관광청(観光庁)이 제시한 가이드라인에 충실하게 따르고 있으나, 영어 이외의 표기에 대해서는 필요에 따라 표 기하는 경향이 있어 각 철도회사마다 다언어표기의 양상에는 차이가 보였다. 또한 다 언어표기는 ‘시인성과 미관상에 문제가 없는 경우’에 사용하는 것이 바람직하다는 지 침 상, 모든 정보를 다언어로 표기하게 되면 한눈에 알아보기 힘들어질 가능성이 높다. 따라서 철도 이용객의 눈에 자주 들어오는 시설물은 동일한 유형으로 통일하고, 역명 과 같이 고유명사와 관련된 정보는 가급적이면 영어 이외의 표기를 사용하는 것이 바 람직하다고 판단된다.
